Bhutan became the 132nd member of the United Nations on 21 September 1971, thereby accepting the values and principles of the organization. The Office of the United Nations in Bhutan was established in early 1974. Since then, the country has been home to UN agencies, funds, and programmes that work as a team to respond to national development needs and improve the economic and social conditions of people of Bhutan.

Legal change matters. When laws change, lives change.

This International Womenโ€™s Day 2026 comes as Thailand updates its legal tools to address a form of violence that increasingly happens online.

Across the region, technology-facilitated gender-based violence is rising, from unsolicited sexual messages to the spread of humiliating content. Advocates say stronger laws and faster remedies are critical to protect womenโ€™s safety, work, education and public participation.
