We are delighted to welcome our new colleague, Orla Sharp, to the Embassy team. Orla will be taking on the role of Consular Attaché.

Before joining the Embassy, Orla has worked at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for over 20 years in various areas including Ministerial Office, Protocol, Political Unit, and Human Resources. She completed two postings to Brussels and for the last few years Orla has worked as a Consular supervisor within the Consular Directorate.

Orla is from Dublin and has an HONS Degree in Psychology and an MA in Children’s Human Rights Protection.

We are very pleased to have Orla on board and wish her every success and happiness during her time in Bangkok.✨️

โซนาลีและผมรู้สึกซาบซึ้งกับการต้อนรับอันอบอุ่นจากศูนย์ฮาร์ปและดนตรีเชียงใหม่ (Chiang Mai Harp and Music Center-ศูนย์ฮาร์พฯ เชียงใหม่) ซึ่งมิตรสหายของเราจากที่นั่นได้จัดการแสดงดนตรีเพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่เราครับ โดยผสมผสานศาสตร์หลายเเขนง ทั้งดนตรี เพลง การเต้นรำ และบทกวีของไอร์แลนด์เข้ากับดนตรีไทยและดนตรีล้านนาได้ลงตัว ซึ่งนักเรียน ผู้ปกครอง และคณะครูต่างร่วมกันสร้างชุมชนที่อบอุ่น เเละเรารู้สึกยินดีที่ได้เห็นความสนใจในดนตรีฮาร์ป ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่เชื่อมโยงความสัมพันธ์ของไทยเเละไอร์เเลนด์เข้าด้วยกัน

เรายังได้รับชมการแสดงของคณะนักร้องประสานเสียงจากมหาวิทยาลัยพายัพ ซึ่งกำลังเตรียมการแสดง Messiah ของฮันเดล ที่มีผลงานที่เปิดการแสดงครั้งแรกที่กรุงดับลิน

ผมยังมีโอกาสเยี่ยมชมโรงเรียนโสตศึกษาเชียงใหม่ และรู้สึกยินดีที่ได้มอบหนังสือสำหรับเด็กเพื่อสนับสนุนห้องสมุดของโรงเรียน

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างไอร์แลนด์และเชียงใหม่ยังคงแน่นแฟ้นยิ่งขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง และผมมั่นใจว่าในอีกไม่กี่เดือนข้างหน้า เราจะได้เห็นโครงการและความร่วมมือดี ๆ เกิดขึ้นอีกมากมายเร็ว ๆ นี้

From Ambassador Pat Bourne "My last official visit to Chiang Mai was hugely enjoyable, with a strong focus on cultural links, and music in particular.

Sonali and I were overwhelmed at the welcome we received at the Chiang Mai Harp and Music Centre.

Our friends there organised a wonderful concert in our honour with wonderful interweaving of Irish and traditional Siamese and Lana music, song, dance and poetry. The young students, families and teachers make up such a wonderful community, and there is such enthusiasm for our shared affinity with the harp.

We were also treated to a beautiful performance from the Student Choir at Payap University, who are preparing for a concert performance of Handel’s choral masterpiece ‘Messiah’, which, of course, has special connections to Ireland, having been premiered in Dublin.

We also visited the incredible community at the Chiang Mai School for the Deaf, and I was delighted to present a donation of children’s books for the school library.

The links between Ireland and Chiang Mai continue to strengthen, and I am confident we will see some great initiatives bearing fruit in the coming months. Watch this space!

During my last official visit to Chiang Mai, I was delighted to pay a a call on the hardworking team at the Consulate if Ireland in the northern provinces. I express my deep and sincere thanks to Annette Kunigagon and her team for all that they do for Irish citizens and to advance the links between Ireland and Chiang Mai.

The historical links around the work of Irish botanist Arthur Kerr are particularly strong, and Annette is rightly proud of the great work she has done to strengthen the connections between Kerr’s childhood home place in County Leitrim and the place where he made his life in Siam.

Annette is a passionate advocate for Ireland and for Chiang Mai – keep up the great work.

Ambassador Pat Bourne paid a farewell call on Governor Chadchart Sittipunt today. During the meeting, Ambassador congratulated Governor Chadchart on his re-election as Governor of Bangkok and expressed his sincere appreciation to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) for its continued support throughout his tenure as Ireland's Ambassador to Thailand.

On this occasion, Ambassador Bourne highlighted the strong partnership between the Embassy of Ireland and the BMA, reflected in a number of collaborative initiatives, including tree-planting activities, the donation of Irish books under the Embassy's Global Book Giveaway project, and Music in the Park, which have strengthened the friendship and cultural ties between Ireland and Bangkok.

Today, the Embassy was honoured to donate a curated collection of Irish literary works today to the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, under the Bloomsday Global Book Giveaway Programme 2026. The collection included 𝘈 𝘏𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘐𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 by Martin Doyle, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 by Donal Ryan, and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴 by Emma Donoghue.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Associate Professor Nida Tiranasawasdi, PhD Head of the Department of English, and Associate Professor Verita Sriratana, PhD, Lecturer at the Department of English, for receiving the books on behalf of the Faculty of Arts.

This donation builds on our collaboration through the Irish Literature Festival, celebrating Bloomsday 2026, organised by the Embassy in June, where Associate Professor Verita Sriratana,PhD joined us as one of the speakers.

As part of the responsibilities Ireland has assumed since 1 July as Presidency of the Council of the European Union, our Government is taking the lead on coordinating common EU positions, and aligning positions with like-minded international partners in a range of United Nations and other multilateral forums and processes.
I am delighted to welcome colleagues from the Irish Department of the Environment and Climate in Bangkok this week to play such a role at an important meeting under the Montreal Protocol process. You may not have heard of it, but it is really important. The Montreal Protocol was the Agreement, secured in the late 1980s, that led to the phasing out of CFCs, the harmful gasses that were the cause of the damage to the earth’s protective ozone layer. Due to the success of the international cooperation in this area, millions of lives have been saved, and there have also been enormous indirect benefits for other processes, including on confronting climate change and other global challenges, due to the lessons learned and innovative approaches developed by the Montreal Protocol community.
The Irish EU Presidency slogan is ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile’ meaning ‘we are strong when we are united’. If ever there was a powerful example of the truth and relevance of this idea, it is the success of our collective international efforts, within the United Nations framework, to arrest and reverse the depletion of the ozone layer.
I wish all involved every success with the deliberations and discussions this week and into the future.

The Embassy of Ireland in Thailand is deeply saddened by the tragic fire that broke out in the Lat Phrao area of Bangkok.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and wish a full and speedy recovery to all those injured. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating tragedy.
