When part of the Birch Glacier collapsed above the Swiss Alpine village of Blatten (VS) in May 2025, most of the village was destroyed. Yet residents and tourists had already been safely evacuated after warning signs were detected.
How?
🔍 Across the country, trained observers monitor mountain slopes and report any unusual changes. Above Blatten, new cracks and increasing rock activity alerted the cantonal authorities, allowing a response plan to be put in place.
🚧 But prevention goes beyond monitoring. Switzerland also relies on hazard maps, protective infrastructure such as avalanche barriers and retention dams, and detailed evacuation plans to reduce the impact of natural hazards.
Following the Blatten event, Switzerland is further strengthening research on mountain hazards.
