𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆: 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝘆 🇨🇭️ 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆!

When part of the Birch Glacier collapsed above the Swiss Alpine village of Blatten (VS) in May 2025, most of the village was destroyed. Yet residents and tourists had already been safely evacuated after warning signs were detected.

How?

🔍 Across the country, trained observers monitor mountain slopes and report any unusual changes. Above Blatten, new cracks and increasing rock activity alerted the cantonal authorities, allowing a response plan to be put in place.

🚧 But prevention goes beyond monitoring. Switzerland also relies on hazard maps, protective infrastructure such as avalanche barriers and retention dams, and detailed evacuation plans to reduce the impact of natural hazards.

Following the Blatten event, Switzerland is further strengthening research on mountain hazards.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘀 𝗥ö𝘀𝘁𝗶. 🥔✨

The potato dish Rösti brings a true taste of Switzerland to the table. As Swiss National Day approaches, here is how it's made:

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
For 4 people

• 1 kg firm potatoes, boiled in their skins the previous day
• 1 tbsp salt
• Roasting butter

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

1. Peel the potatoes and grate them into a large bowl. Add the salt and mix gently.

2. Heat some roasting butter in a nonstick frying pan. Add the grated potatoes and cook for about five minutes, turning them occasionally.

3. Using a spatula, shape the potatoes into a flat, compact cake. Cook uncovered over medium heat for 15 minutes.

4. Place a flat plate over the pan and carefully flip the Rösti onto it. Add a little more butter to the pan, slide the Rösti back in and cook the other side for another 15 minutes, uncovered.

5. Serve hot and enjoy. 😋

𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘀 – 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 🇨🇭 !

In 1863, Geneva born Henry Dunant founded what became the 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀. Four years earlier, he had witnessed the aftermath of the 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗼, where the wounded received almost no organised medical care. That experience led him to propose neutral relief societies, which became the Red Cross, and an international agreement to protect the wounded, which became the first 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in 1864. 🧑‍⚕️

Since its foundation, the sole aim of the Red Cross has been to protect and assist people affected by armed conflicts and fighting. Switzerland has hosted the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) headquarters ever since and remains one of the organisation's largest donors. 🇨🇭
