At 10:40am today, Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi watchstanders received a "Mayday" call from a vessel 24 nautical miles offshore Port Aransas, who was rapidly taking on water with six people on board. Sector Corpus Christi launched a response boat from Station Port Aransas, and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi provided two aircraft to assist, all arriving within the hour. The boat crew successfully stopped the source of flooding, dewatered the vessel, and escorted the mariners to shore. This photo, taken by our fixed wing crew, shows the Coast Guard’s response to this incident. We are prepared to respond to distress at any time.

At 0830 this morning, Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi heard a “MAYDAY” broadcast on Channel 16. The location was confirmed to be about 2 nautical miles offshore the mouth of the Colorado River. The Coast Guard immediately launched a helicopter from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi and a response boat from Station Port O’Connor arriving within the hour. The vessel had capsized with 4 adults on board who were all wearing their life jackets. A Good Samaritan vessel in the area responded to our Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and pulled the people out of the water. The Coast Guard ensured there were no medical concerns and all people were safe. Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens responded quickly as well and took this picture of the recovery, later bringing the 4 people to shore. The Coast Guard remains ready to respond to distress on the water at any time, constantly monitoring Channel 16.

The success of this recovery is largely due to mariners having VHF radios on board, interagency connections with Texas Parks & Wildlife, and mariners wearing Coast Guard approved life jackets. Make sure you have the appropriate equipment on board if you are celebrating Labor Day on the water!

Volunteer for the 2026 National Recreational Boating Safety Survey!

The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) is a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard to understand how many people go boating, what types of boats they use, and how often they are on the water. As part of the survey, we are asking for volunteers to complete a brief sign-up page asking about their boating habits and share their contact information with the Coast Guard so a wide range of boaters can be invited to participate in the larger NRBSS survey later in the year.

As we kick off the summer boating season, National Safe Boating Week (May 16–22, 2026) serves as an important reminder that safety on the water starts before you leave the dock.
