The Alpena is one of the most historic vessels to visit Port Green Bay, with a legacy spanning more than 80 years.
Originally launched in 1942 as the SS Leon Fraser, the vessel hauled iron ore during World War II before being transformed in 1991 into the self-unloading cement carrier we know today. After being shortened by 120 feet and renamed Alpena, she continues delivering cement to ports across the Great Lakes.
Today, the Alpena is recognized as the oldest active steamship on the Great Lakes, proving that craftsmanship and innovation can stand the test of time!
