The Beacon (Houston)

The Beacon (Houston) Through its core programs, The Beacon provides essential services such as hot meals, showers and laundry five days a week.

The organization also offers next-step services to help individuals resolve from experiencing homelessness. The Beacon is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in the heart of downtown Houston. The core programs of The Beacon provide essential and next-step services to empower individuals and engage them in recovery from a life on the streets. The Beacon's core programs:

on Law
- Brigid’s Hope at The Beacon
- COMPASS

Through these programs The Beacon addresses hunger, health, hygiene, employment, legal issues and housing instability. In 2014, The Beacon aligned with the Coalition for the Homeless-Houston/Harris County Continuum of Care initiative known as The Way Home. The goal of the The Way Home is to change the path for Houston’s homeless by creating permanent supportive housing units and implementing a coordinated intake, assessment and triage system for those in need.

One of our amazing partners and steadfast supporters, Gexa Energy, recently celebrated 25 years of operation by giving back to the community through service at The Beacon, Meals on Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity.

KPRC 2 recently highlighted Gexa Energy’s generous team and their commitment to serving others, while also shining a light on The Beacon and the neighboring organizations who come together to help strengthen our community.

We're proud to have Gexa Energy as one of our most reliable and dedicated volunteer groups. Their team eagerly serves alongside us in meal and laundry services, helping ensure our clients can access essential resources in a welcoming and supportive environment.

As we reflect on July, we're proud to celebrate the completion of the REACH program.

Led by a UTMB Occupational Therapy doctoral student alongside one of our LPC Associate Pathways team members, REACH (Recreation, Engagement, and Activities for Community Health) became a meaningful addition to the services we offer at The Beacon.

Over the course of ten weeks, participants explored their creativity by drawing self-portraits, experimenting with oil pastels, sculpting with clay, and enjoying a lively game of bingo. Each activity was designed to encourage social connection, creative expression, and overall well-being for clients at our Day Center.

We are grateful for the dedication and hard work that brought REACH to life. By engaging in meaningful recreational and social activities, participants built a stronger sense of community, strengthened their well-being, and found encouragement to return to The Beacon for continued support on their journey toward stability.

Chef Hugo will be serving up the first course at dinner on September 17, featuring a recipe from Backstreet Cafe — reopening soon after a rebuild of the beloved River Oaks staple.

This past weekend, participants in The Beacon's Brigid's Hope program gathered at Camp Allen for their annual retreat, marking the culmination of the eight week The Only One Standing in Your Way Is You curriculum.

Surrounded by mentors, staff, and one another, the women spent the weekend reflecting, building community, creating vision boards, and embracing the possibilities ahead. These moments of connection and encouragement are an important part of the journey toward lasting recovery and renewed purpose.

We're deeply grateful to Donna and Fred Lowe, whose longtime support and commitment have helped make this meaningful experience possible.
