A ~1% net bump for PT in the proposed 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule? Don't call it a raise just yet. 💲

In this issue's Payment Pearl, learn what effects—both positive and negative—the 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule may have on physical therapy.

✅ The positive:
🔹 CMS projects a ~3% increase for PT/OT by retiring an outdated practice expense index that has discounted PT's costs for years

⚠️ The negative:
🔹 The conversion factor would drop 1.68%, netting PT closer to ~1%
🔹 Underlying cost data still date back nearly 20 years
🔹 Proposed remote therapeutic monitoring restrictions could hit rural and mobility-limited patients hardest

The takeaway: the profession's long-term payment outlook depends on data that orthopedic PTs are uniquely positioned to generate.
