🎒✨High-fives, flashing lights, and a whole lot of school spirit! 🚓🚒

This week, members of the New Bern Police Department and New Bern Fire-Rescue rose early to welcome our elementary students back to campus. Our crews were thrilled to greet students and families during the morning drop-off window!

We had an absolute blast kicking off the new school year with the future leaders at each of these fantastic schools:
J.T. Barber Elementary School
Oaks Road Academy
Ben D. Quinn Elementary School
Trent Park Elementary School
Creekside Elementary School

From helping to unload buses to exchanging fist bumps and smiles at the front doors, our first responders loved being part of this exciting milestone. Our top priority is making sure our young learners feel safe, supported, and energized to learn.

A huge thank you to the incredible teachers, administrators, parents, and students who made us feel so welcome. Let’s make this a safe, successful, and amazing school year! 📚🍎

New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club Kicks Off September 14th

The New Bern Police Department is excited to kick off our 10th session of the New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club. Beginning Monday, September 14, 2026, weekly chess sessions will be held at West New Bern Recreation Center, 1225 Pinetree Drive, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

The New Bern Noble Knights Chess Club is designed to build and maintain strong relationships with our youth community while having fun. The club offers 12 weeks of coaching, mentoring, and team building alongside police department staff and certified chess instructors. All skill levels are welcome to join, and parents are encouraged to accompany their kids through the program so they can play chess together at home.

Participants will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from experienced chess instructors and to play matches against members of the New Bern Police Department. The program is free to join, and no prior chess experience is required. While it is especially ideal for middle school students, we welcome all
interested students to sign up and take part.

Get ready for the ultimate showdown at the diamond! The 9th annual Boots vs. Badges Charity Softball Game is Saturday, August 29! This game pits the firefighters against the police for bragging rights & community glory. Join us tomorrow night at Kafer Park at 6pm to see who takes home the trophy!

With school back in session, our local crosswalks are bustling with students heading to class. Let's work together to ensure every child arrives safely by staying alert and always yielding to pedestrians.

• Scan ahead for school zones.
• Stop completely for pedestrians.
• Never pass stopped school buses.
• Put down cell phones.

🎒 Student Checklist
• Look both ways before crossing.
• Make eye contact with drivers.
• Use designated crosswalks only.
• Walk safely, do not run.

🎒Craven County schools are back in session, New Bern! Our streets are much busier now with kids walking, biking, and riding buses. Please stay alert and drive with care to keep everyone safe.

🛑 Drivers: Your Back-to-School Checklist
• Slow down: Brake early for active school zones.
• Stay alert: Obey crossing guards immediately.
• Stop completely: Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing lights.
• Yield always: Give pedestrians the right-of-way at crosswalks.

⚠️ Did You Know?
In North Carolina, passing a stopped school bus is a Class 1 misdemeanor. Violators face a minimum $500 fine and 5 points on their driver's license. Worse than the ticket is the risk of hurting a child—let's keep our roads safe!
