A bit fuzzy, but yesterday's wind made focusing a dream. Warm temperatures brought this pink yarrow into bloom, and with it a happy memory of the many people who have supported us with their plant divisions. A few years back, Jim Sidlowski held a plant exchange at Hermitage, and gave me this for the cemetery. It's thriving, and looks well mixed in with white yarrow. Thanks again, Jim!

The signs of spring are everywhere. The bulbs we've planted over the past few years are showering us with renewed energy. Great visit from US Fish & Wildlife Foundation and PA IP&L to discuss the vision for expanding Farnhurst's pollinator habitat and the propoed plant list.

Restoring a forgotten, historic cemetery requires working on many aspects of restoring dignity to those buried there. Through the painstaking research of anthropologist and historian Kathy Dettwyler and former DE Medical Examiner Hal Brown, we have learned that at least 10 men buried in the Spiral and Farnhurst Cemeteries were veterans. They fought in the Civil and Spanish American wars and World War I. The US Dept. of Veterans Affairs program "Restoring/Replacing Headstones for Veterans" will provide headstones, free of charge, for veterans in unmarked graves. We just submitted the first request for 8 headstones. A short bit of information about each one will be highlighted in upcoming posts. Photo is from the Historic Marker dedication at Farnhurst Potter's Field (11/1/2020), the Executive Director of the DE Office of Veterans Affairs stands on the left.

Winter is the time when the earth rests and gardeners plan. Through a grant from the US Fish & Wildlife Foundation, we've received funding to install a wetland pollinator plant border along Boulden Blvd. This was once a wetland. The first grant meeting was last night, and we're looking forward to the year ahead, with exciting developments happening each month.

Delaware Master Naturalist volunteers are so important to these cemetery projects. Dedicated and enthusiastic, they sometimes even enlist their spouse for specialized work, such as hardscaping. The Dettwyler Memorial Bench now rests on a platform. Thanks to Megan, Paula and spouses for making it look formal yet inviting.

There's a chill in the air; time to plant spring bulbs. Master Naturalist Paula McGowan makes it look so each with a power drill. We were disturbed to discover than someone had defaced one of the cemetery trees with graffiti. Whoever did this, please understand that this is an offense to those buried here and the environment. It is also a class A misdemeanor under Delaware Law, Title 11, Section 1340, and carries a $1000-$10,000 fine.
