One way to mark the seasons is by what is coming into bloom or fruiting. Almost autumn means the goldenrod is starting to bloom and 'Berry Poppins', a winterberry holly has produced bright red berries. The zinnias just keep blooming, a good thing because today a hummingbird stopped by for some nectar.

Zinnias are not native, but they are a wonderful burst of vibrant color and a butterfly magnet. They are also, as the old timers would say, "thrifty". You only need to buy seeds once, and then they keep on giving, bringing renewed life to the cemetery.

One of the most rewarding aspects of working in the cemetery is being surrounded by the care and contributions of the many people who have volunteered their time and treasure. The photo of the sun-bathed blanket flower is courtesy of Dawn Riley, DE Master Naturalist. The blanket flower came from a seed pack, given many years ago by Kathy Dettwyler. The zinnia explosion was made possible by Paula Markey, who has harvested seeds and tended to seedlings. The wheelbarrow that lightens our load was a gift from Marianne Reeves. All these things make me happy and grateful.

On Saturday Farnhurst welcomed bikers on Delaware Greenways Freedom Ride, honoring Juneteenth. Kathy Dettwyler told the group about the cemetery's history, and stories she's researched about people buried there.

The parade of flowers continues. Yarrow in every shade of pink that genetics will allow, lots of larkspur (thanks to a seed mix packet Kathy Dettwyler gave me years ago), Rudbeckia, milkweed, plus marigolds, cosmos and zinnia from last year's seed.

A bit fuzzy, but yesterday's wind made focusing a dream. Warm temperatures brought this pink yarrow into bloom, and with it a happy memory of the many people who have supported us with their plant divisions. A few years back, Jim Sidlowski held a plant exchange at Hermitage, and gave me this for the cemetery. It's thriving, and looks well mixed in with white yarrow. Thanks again, Jim!

The parade of spring blooms continues.

Working in the cemetery today was a joy, with a parade of daffodils set against a clear blue spring sky.
