This month's Sailor in the Spotlight is Logistics Specialist Second Class (LS2) Ebenezer Abekah.

Abekah provides logistic support for repair parts and hazardous material procurement for MARMC's Logistics Department, Code 500.

“LS2 Abekah has continually delivered outstanding work with little to no discrepancies while also creating new and better processes to continually improve the ordering process of the government purchase card program,” said Logistics Specialist Chief (LSC) Matthew Hathorn, command financial specialist for MARMC.

“His expertise and dedication have contributed immeasurably to the high state of readiness required to support MARMC’s operational commitments.”

A native of Ghana, Abekah lived in Georgia and worked at a warehouse before enlisting in the Navy. Driven by a desire to build a better life for his family, he chose the Navy for its proximity to the ocean and potential for career growth. Abekah has been stationed at MARMC since September, 2021.

Meet this month's Sailor in the Spotlight!

Recently promoted Lt. Cmdr. Olivia Wittman, assistant project manager for USS San Antonio (LPD 17).

The Waterfront Operations Department, Code 300, administers ship modernization and repair contracts on ships assigned to US Fleet Forces Command in the Atlantic Fleet. Code 300 serves as the central point of contact for customers and Ship’s Force on all matters regarding ship and boat repairs.

“Wittman’s performance as the project officer for the complex USS San Antonio availability has been nothing short of outstanding,” said Sean Greenway, the Waterfront Operations manager for MARMC who has worked extensively with Wittman for the past 18 months.

“Her efforts have significantly upgraded the warfighting capability of LPD 17 and include improvements to Cryptologic Warfare Systems, Surface Search Radar capabilities, Engineering Control Systems and Ships Self Defense Systems. Lt. Cmdr. Wittman can be counted on when needed most and I would not hesitate to give her the most difficult and challenging work. She is positive proof that Navy leadership has a bright future.”

MARMC Family,

A strong low pressure system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain and strong gusty winds starting in the early afternoon of Friday, September 22 through early Sunday, September 24.

With the imminent threat of inclement weather set to impact our region, MARMC will follow CNRMA and Naval Station Norfolk guidance. Starting 1000 tomorrow, Friday, September 22, the Front Office is authorizing max telework for civilians, with supervisor concurrence. A full day of work coverage is still expected to be completed by the team. If an employee does not have a telework agreement in place, Administrative Leave can be authorized by the supervisor.

Today would be a good day to run any errands or do any shopping you need before the storm hits tomorrow. For anyone who needs to be on the road during the storm’s impact, please use extreme caution on your commute.

Please continue to monitor local news and the MARMC phone line (757-396-7777) along with social media for the latest updates!

Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center’s (MARMC) STEM team hosted a Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) exhibit during Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana’s 2023 Air Show Sept. 15 – 17.

“STEM isn’t only about engineering, it’s about discipline,” said Arvin Persaud, coordinator for MARMC’s STEM team and a mechanical engineering technician in MARMC’s Production Research and Planning Division.

“It’s about mental discipline and educational discipline. We found that when you have a STEM background starting in middle school or earlier, as you get into high school and beyond, you’re more focused.”

In May 2023, Smith was recognized for her exceptional work, receiving the On the Spot Award for her support on USS Mahan’s Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) flush, and the Navy Civilian Service Achievement Medal in recognition of her significant contributions while serving as primary shipbuilding specialist for the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

“Annette has great attention to detail,” said Smith’s supervisor Frederick Bairdain.

“She knows how to take care of the business at hand and is able to stay on track, focusing on small details, to ensure all work is completed efficiently and to a high standard.”
