EPA is awarding funding to Mid-Atlantic states—Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia—to monitor water quality at beaches and keep you safe while swimming! 🏖️💧

Thanks to this funding, states will be able to provide timely alerts if bacteria levels rise and swimming conditions become unsafe. ⚠️ The BEACH Act makes this funding possible.

Enjoy the beaches across the region this summer and stay informed about where you visit.

🌊🤝 Cooperative federalism in action!

Recently, our biologists supported Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO)'s bimonthly water quality sampling program on the Ohio River at the Monaca monitoring station in Pennsylvania, using an EPA research boat. 🚤

This program, launched in 1975, provides critical data for assessing water quality. The data collected helps our state partners in Pennsylvania identify polluted waters, track changes over time, ensure polluters follow environmental regulations and are held accountable. 🌊🔍

The moving equipment, known as Pandora, is a spectrometer that tracks the sun and moon to detect minute changes in ultra- violet and visible light. This information is then used to identify the amount of trace gases in the atmosphere as well as validate satellite data.

This effort by & U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will improve long-term monitoring of gases in the region 🔭 🌌

AI technology is transforming waste management at a facility in our region. ♻️

We toured the innovative AMP facility in Portsmouth, Virginia, to see how AMP’s advanced AI-powered system uses computer vision, robotics, and pneumatic air jets. 🤖 This technology automatically detects and separates recyclables and organics from bagged municipal solid waste—eliminating the need for separate recycling bins or trucks. 🚛

What makes it unique: The system sorts raw materials into different streams—recyclables by type, organic matter (which is turned into biochar), and residue that can be converted into biofuel. 🌱🔥

This recycling effort is a gamechanger for the Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia, which serves over 1 million residents. 🌍 Starting as a pilot project, AMP partners with SPSA Waste Solutions to demonstrate how cities and regional waste authorities across the country can modernize recycling, reduce environmental impact, and save money. 🔄♻️

🌊 A day spent exploring the Sound!

Recently, we joined U.S. EPA New England Region and U.S. EPA Northeast and Caribbean Region for an action-packed day on the Long Island Sound.

🤝 In partnership with NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic, EPA and the Long Island Sound Partnership are working together to restore oysters in the Sound.

🦪🌊 Our Region 3 Dive Team is supporting this project through monthly dives to help National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and EPA’s Long Island Sound Office collect important environmental data.

Last year, EPA took a major step to protect the endangered Atlantic Sturgeon here in our region. 🐟

We established federal water quality standards for 38 miles of the Delaware River, helping to improve water quality and support vital fish populations—including the historic Atlantic Sturgeon—a key species for both commercial and recreational fishing. 🎣🌿

Fun Fact: Fossil records over 120 million years old show these torpedo-shaped fish with bony armor plates called scutes—like ancient dinosaur armor. They can live up to 70 years, grow up to 16 feet long, and weigh as much as 800 pounds.
