EPA is always working to Power the Great American Comeback initiative by restoring American energy dominance and continuing to protect human health and the environment.

At this year's Summer Meeting, hosted by the Gas & Oil Association of West Virginia, our discussion focused on the importance of reliable, affordable energy, practical and achievable regulations, and the role of cooperative federalism in empowering states to lead. We also highlighted West Virginia’s opportunities to support growing electricity demand driven by manufacturing, data centers, and AI, and the critical role Appalachian natural gas plays in strengthening grid reliability and economic growth.

We were happy to engage with stakeholders & reaffirm EPA’s commitment to being a collaborative partner with West Virginia as we work toward shared environmental and economic goals.

Science meets teamwork in Parkersburg. 🔬💧

EPA’s Mobile Lab is bringing rapid scientific testing directly to the Peoples Cartage Warehouse Fire Response. As part of the Unified Command, we are working side-by-side with WV Department of Environmental Protection, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and local partners to protect public health and the environment. 🤝🌱

Inside the mobile lab, our scientists are analyzing soil and water samples right on-site. By reviewing sampling data and discussing findings with the state in real time, this technology gives local officials the information they need to make safety decisions for the local community and businesses.

We are partnering to protect our communities & the environment.

EPA leadership recently joined Joint Base Andrews & the Air Force Civil Engineer Center in Maryland to see environmental projects underway. 🌎💧

For years, EPA, Joint Base Andrews, the Maryland Department of the Environment, and local partners have worked together on environmental monitoring, cleanup and restoration efforts. That collaboration helps address contamination and protect the surrounding community and the environment.

From long-term cleanup efforts to planning for what’s ahead, strong partnerships like these help us find lasting solutions and keep environmental protection moving forward.

🚧 What does a Superfund cleanup look like?

EPA leaders recently visited the Hidden Lane Landfill Superfund site in Sterling, Virginia, to see cleanup work in action and meet with the teams making it happen.

At Hidden Lane Landfill, we are constructing a new waterline, addressing areas of contamination, and maintaining treatment systems that provide safe drinking water to affected homes. 💧🏠

The visit gave EPA leadership a closer look at the progress being made, the challenges that come with complex cleanups, and the work underway to keep the community informed and engaged.

🤝 Cleanup efforts like these take teamwork. EPA is working alongside federal, state, and local partners, including Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is overseeing construction at the site. 🌎

Clean water is essential to healthy communities, and protecting it is at the heart of what we do at EPA. 🌎

One way we help protect local waterways is by getting out in the field and testing water quality.

🧪💦 These photos show our team collecting water samples— providing a hands-on look at the work we do to better understand and protect our aquatic resources.

For more than 50 years, we have collaborated with an array of state and local organizations to implement the Clean Water Act, helping protect our nation’s waters by setting standards for water quality and regulating pollution that can enter our waterways. We’re proud to work alongside our partners to help keep water clean and protect the communities that depend on it. 🤝

We joined partners Trash Free Maryland & Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently at a new refilling station at Caroline St. on the Ocean City, Maryland boardwalk!

The "Rethink Your Drink" campaign by MARCO - Mid-Atlantic Regional Council on the Ocean aims to reduce plastic water bottles in our waterways by encouraging the use of refillable water bottles instead.

They created this campaign to encourage the use of reusable water bottles.

🌊 Through its Marine Debris Work Group, which includes EPA Region 3 staff, MARCO regularly monitors Mid-Atlantic beaches for trash and debris and found plastic bottles and caps are among the most common items. To help address this, MARCO conducted audience research to better understand what motivates people to switch to reusable bottles. The campaign includes water refill stations, stickers for water bottles, tailored signage, and events across MARCO’s five member states: MD, VA, DE, NJ, and NY.

EPA recently supported a community workshop led by the Office of Brownfields and Land Revitalization partners.

The Recreation Economy for Rural Communities planning assistance program helps communities find ways to grow their outdoor recreation economy while also bringing new life to their main streets.

By helping communities build up both their main streets and their outdoor spaces, the program can support local revitalization, protect air and water quality, create jobs, diversify local economies, and give more people opportunities to connect with nature.

This workshop featured partners including Appalachian Regional Commission, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Virginia Department of Transportation & Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The workshop helped lay the groundwork for a Community Action Plan aimed at expanding outdoor recreation opportunities and supporting downtown revitalization. The steering committee will continue meeting through 2026 and into 2027 to finalize the plan.

If your area was affected by smoke, check your HVAC filter every few days and change it if needed. A clean filter will remove particles more effectively to protect your indoor air. Use a higher-efficiency filter (ideally MERV 13) if your system can accommodate it.
