NAMI Rhode Island was founded in 1983 by family members of people with serious mental illness as a grassroots, volunteer organization joined together to improve services for persons who are diagnosed with mental illness. Today we support education, research and other efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination against consumers of mental health services and their families which will finally lead to understanding and cure for this common health disorder.

Our NAMI Rhode Island Family Support Groups are free, and are led by trained facilitators who also have lived experience as family members themselves. The group meetings last about 1.5 hours, and everyone who participates in the meeting gets a chance to share. The other members of the group try to offer help and resources, when appropriate, based on their own experiences. No pre-registration for family support groups is necessary.
