Last week, my office hosted a Bat Talk and Tour through the Yolo Basin Foundation (YBF) for community partners and constituents. We were glad to be joined by representatives from Senator Christopher Cabaldon and Assembly Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry’s Offices, the Yolo County Farm Bureau. We were also joined by members of county staff and readers of the District 4 Newsletter.

My thanks go out to Bat Expert Corky Quirk and all the YBF Staff and volunteers who make these tours happen. In addition to seeing the bats up close, a highlight of the tour was seeing YBF’s new bat sonogram technology in action through their new mobile visitor center.

I was delighted to join my fellow Supervisors Angel Barajas and Lucas Frerichs, as well as county staff and leaders from the Dunnigan Community, at the groundbreaking for Yolo County’s 2026 Pavement Preservation Project. This year, the county will be resurfacing around 26 miles of roadway, largely in and around Dunnigan. The project will also resurface roads just north of Woodland and road 28H on the way to the county landfill.

We were also glad to be joined by Dunnigan resident and Yolo County’s Superintendent of Schools, Garth Lewis!

My colleagues and I certified the results of not just the June 2nd primary election, but also the results of the El Macero Prop 218 in support of the El Macero Roads and Landscaping Assessment. Homeowners in El Macero voted by almost 80% to increase the assessment to ensure more frequent road maintenance.

I was also proud to hear about the amazing work the county’s sustainability team is doing to move towards the county’s climate target with the limited resources we have available. I was also glad to receive updates from the Yolo County Fairgrounds and Visit Yolo about the work both organizations are doing to celebrate and promote our county.

Yolo County will rehabilitate a section of County Road 28H between County Roads 102 and 103 during the week of July 13–17. The work is part of the County’s $5.54 million 2026 Pavement Preservation Project, which will improve approximately 26 miles of roadway throughout Yolo County.

Crews will replace the top four inches of asphalt pavement and restripe the roadway. The work will improve driving conditions and help extend the useful life of this important route near the Yolo County Central Landfill.

Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. The road will remain open during construction, but motorists should expect intermittent lane closures in both directions and travel delays.

The District 4 team had the opportunity to visit Zipline’s Nest Z testing facility at the Yolo Land and Cattle Company Ranch in rural Yolo County. We appreciated learning more about Zipline’s work and their innovations in drone technology.

We also discussed ways to expand Zipline’s positive impact in our community, including through potential partnerships with schools in Yolo County.

My colleagues and I tackled a packed agenda yesterday yesterday, including the appointment of a new District Attorney, the approval of the county’s fee schedule for 2026-2027, and the approval of Yolo County’s integrated plan.

We also passed resolutions recognizing the work of three retiring county employees, including former District 4 Deputy Supervisor (and my old colleague on the Davis School Board), Gina Daleiden. Gina is retiring from her position as First 5 Executive Director after years of public service and I wish her all the best in her next chapter.

The Yolo County Board of Supervisors has adopted the County’s formal response to the Civil Grand Jury report regarding the July 1, 2025, Oakdale Fire near Esparto.

The response addresses the Grand Jury’s findings and recommendations, identifies areas where the County is taking action, and explains where the County reaches different conclusions based on the information now available.

UPDATE 4:45 p.m. 6/8/26:

The Putah Fire is now estimated at 362 acres with 0% containment, according to CAL FIRE.

Westerly winds continue to carry smoke through Winters, Davis and into West Sacramento this afternoon. Winds are expected to shift south/southwest and weaken after sundown, which could change the smoke path and impact areas farther north.

Residents should expect to continue seeing and smelling smoke this afternoon and evening. As temperatures cool near sunset, smoke will linger closer to the ground.

An active wildfire, the Putah Fire, is currently burning approximately 40–50 acres along Highway 128 near Winters. As of 11:45 a.m. today, June 8, evacuation warnings had been requested for Golden Bear Estates and Bobcat Ranch. Highway 128 is closed between Pleasants Valley Road and Canyon Creek Road.

Westerly winds are pushing smoke toward Winters. PurpleAir sensors in town began detecting smoke impacts around noon, and residents should expect to see and smell smoke throughout the area.

To reduce your exposure to smoke:
• Stay indoors as much as possible
• Keep doors and windows closed
• Run an air purifier if you have one
• Avoid strenuous activity outside
