OPA is a civilian-led police oversight agency that investigates allegations of misconduct against Seattle Police Department employees.

OPA is made up of twenty-two civilian employees and nine sworn (police) employees. This mix of people brings different viewpoints, which helps make sure investigations are fair, thorough and unbiased.

All investigative decision points are made by civilian employees and the OPA Director has final say.

🔎 During investigations, OPA may issue a Management Action Recommendation (MAR) to the Chief of Police, suggesting policy or training improvements. While not required, SPD actively collaborates with OPA on solutions.

On Monday, September 7th, our office will be closed in observance of Labor Day. We are grateful for the workers whose dedication, creativity, and care strengthen our city every day.

🔎 NEW! Closed Case Summaries (CCSs) have been posted: http://bit.ly/opa_ccs

After a thorough review, OPA writes a report with its analysis and recommendations. Then, a Closed Case Summary is posted online, outlining what was investigated, the findings, and any discipline imposed by the police chief.

☀ August has been a busy month for OPA! We had a great time at YesFest Health and Back to School Fair on August 14th. This free event offered health checkups, school supplies and resources for families, and was hosted by the Yesler Community Center and supported by Neighborhood House. Engaging with young people is an important way for us to introduce OPA’s work and help them understand the role we play in the community.
