WIXOM/DUCK LAKE/SLEETH INTERSECTION ON THE COMMERCE TWP./MILFORD TWP. BORDER IS CLOSED UNTIL LATE SUMMER FOR ROUNDABOUT CONSTRUCTION

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) has closed the Wixom Road/Wixom Trail/Sleeth Road/Duck Lake Road intersection on the border of Commerce Township and Milford Township for the construction of its 45th roundabout.
The intersection will remain closed until late summer.
Roundabouts remain a key way for RCOC to reduce traffic fatalities on its roads. RCOC has the largest concentration of roundabouts of any county in Michigan.
The approximately $2.2 million project will be funded by RCOC.
The detour route for the intersection during construction will be Glengary Road to Benstein Road to Sleeth Road to North Commerce Road to East Commerce Road and vice versa.
The work includes:
• Conversion of the existing two signalized intersections into a single, modern roundabout.
• Reconstruction of approximately 0.4 miles of road with asphalt paving and new curbs and gutters.
• Installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalk on the east leg of the roundabout.
• Improvements to storm sewers and drainage.
• Installation of intersection lighting.
The contractor for the project is Angelo Iafrate Construction of Warren. This intersection carries approximately 12,000 vehicles daily.

A Slight to Enhanced Risk for Severe weather exists this evening & tonight as a line of thunderstorms is expected to develop ahead of an approaching cold front. All thunderstorms hazards will be possible with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes as the greatest threats as the line moves across Michigan. Large hail and flooding are also possible. Uncertainty: The scenario where the line of storms weaken as they enter southeast Michigan or the most intense activity tracks south of Michigan remains in play.

Michigan Toward Zero Deaths
June 9, 2026 – The goal is zero fatalities and serious injuries on Michigan roads through the implementation of the Safe System Approach. Since last week, 30 people died on Michigan roadways making a total of 338 this year. In addition, 124 more were seriously injured for a statewide total of 1,820 to date.

Compared to last year at this time, there are 35 fewer fatalities and 96 fewer serious injuries.

Numbers are provided by the Michigan State Police.

GHSA, Waymo Provide Online Safety Training for First Responders
As Waymo continues to expand into new markets, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and Waymo have created an original online safety training course for first responders interacting with Waymo vehicles.

First responders – including law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical services and tow-truck operators – need to have the knowledge and tools to safely interact with new and emerging technologies like autonomous vehicles (AVs), especially when there is no driver.

To ensure first responders feel confident approaching and interacting with autonomous vehicles on the roadways, with or without passengers, Waymo’s First Responder Outreach team leads hands-on vehicle trainings with local fire, police and EMS organizations well in advance of opening their service to public riders. This new, complimentary online instruction supplements the comprehensive in-person training and safety resources available in cities where Waymo vehicles are deployed.

Waymo is coming to Detroit, Michigan, launching the company’s first expansion in the Midwest. They are currently in its manual testing phase in Detroit, with no rides currently available to city residents. It will be the first city that has consistently snowy winters causing difficult driving conditions. Having this training will prepare first responders in the event of an emergency.

The free online training is divided into three modules:

Introduce Waymo’s fully autonomous vehicles, show where they currently operate and explain how the vehicles respond to police and emergency operations.
Provide detailed instructions on how to approach and interact with a Waymo autonomous vehicle.
Explain critical safety procedures for first responders who need to extricate passengers or disconnect a vehicle’s battery.
After completing the self-paced online training, participants will have the opportunity to take an online quiz and download a certificate of completion after passing the quiz.

In addition to the online Waymo training, GHSA has developed a first responder autonomous vehicle resource page that provides information about where AVs are being deployed and includes links to first responder resources available from other developers, like Aurora and Zoox.

This training is proactive and in support of the Safe System Approach’s post-crash care element. To learn more about the Safe System Approach, visit Safe System Approach.
