Honouring the animals who come into our care is an essential part of sustaining ourselves in this work. Every carer has their own way of acknowledging death, and there is no “right” way to do it. What matters is that you allow yourself a moment of truth, a moment of care, and a moment of closure.
For some, it’s the simple act of burying an animal on their property. For others, it’s sitting in the car and having a quiet cry before driving home. Some carers create small rituals, creating a memorial cross or stone or placing a joey in a wheelbarrow with some flowers and letting the mob say goodbye. These gestures aren’t strange or excessive. They’re human. They’re healing. They remind us that the lives we hold matter.
Grief is part of wildlife caring, and acknowledging it is how we maintain our longevity in this work. When an animal doesn’t survive, it doesn’t mean you failed. It means you cared deeply.
If you’re struggling, please reach out. Talk with other members in your group. Visit other carers’ pages for connection and understanding. And if you need more structured support, grief counselling through wildlife services is available and valid.

Teat Sizes As joeys grow, so do their mouths. The older and larger the joey, the longer the teat end needs to be. A teat suitable for a 2 kg joey will be far too short for a 5 kg joey. Teat Shapes Different marsupials have different mouth shapes. A bat teat, for example, won’t suit a Red

Born on Country. Fighting for life.

As bushfires tear through our landscapes right now, kangaroos and other wildlife are running for their lives.
Burnt, dehydrated, terrified. Mothers fleeing with joeys clinging on. Families scattered.

And yet, even in the middle of this devastation, shooters are still out there killing them.

Let that sink in.

While wildlife struggles to survive fire, smoke, hunger and thirst, humans are still treating kangaroos as targets. Still calling slaughter “management”. Still pulling triggers on animals who have already lost everything. While dedicated rescuers are out there trying to save our iconic species heartless shooters are still trying to kill them unmercifully.

Kangaroos belong to this land.
They were born on Country.
They are not pests.
They are not products.
They are not disposable.

If we cannot even stop killing wildlife during a climate emergency and an active fire crisis, then something is deeply broken in our values.

This is not conservation.
This is cruelty layered on catastrophe.

Born on Country. Fighting for life.
They deserve protection, not bullets.
