Last week we spent two days in the Adjacency Zone between Belize and Guatemala visiting with the Organization of American States (OAS) and viewing its operations in various communities.

Since 2012 the EU has been the main provider of financial assistance to the OAS for all the important work it carries out ahead of the ruling by the International Court of Justice on the border dispute.
We support the mission of the OAS for various reasons, among them to promote dialogue and cooperation between Belize and Guatemala at different levels. Also, to ensure the OAS can fulfil its special mandate to carry out impartial verifications of any incident reported by the States. We also work with OAS to promote meaningful community projects that strengthen peaceful coexistence and maintain regional stability while awaiting the ICJ ruling.

The EU continues to uphold a Peaceful Resolution of the Belize- Guatemala Territorial Differendum to help the economies, trade and cooperation in both countries.

A new polyclinic in Duck Run 1 opening soon to the public is going to soon change what access to healthcare means for families in the area. This is going to be game changing for around 6,000 people across 6 communities!

Funded by the and the Government of Belize, this facility will serve Duck Run 1 and neighbouring communities, reducing the need for residents to travel to San Ignacio or elsewhere for urgent medical attention.

In addition to the supporting the construction of the polyclinic and funding all the equipment we have also supported upgrades of the water systems in some of the communities, 4 miles of drains, and 12 culverts. In addition to this we also provided training for community members on emergency response support and firefighting brigades.

With support from the European Union and the Government of Belize, the new Duck Run 1 Polyclinic is going to help bring essential health services to an area that previously had no nearby health facility.

Climate and renewable energy are the future, Belize, another one for the books!

Today we were so excited to inaugurate Belize’s first ever Electric Vehicle (EV) Lab located at the Orange Walk ITVET in partnership with UNDP Belize, Orange Walk ITVET and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology. This new EV lab will serve to deliver a certified EV programme for students, electricians and automotive mechanics providing with hands on experience in servicing both electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

After supporting the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology in developing the first EV curriculum in 2024, we’re now stepping up the game! The new state of the art lab is equipped with special training equipment funded by including EV charging station trainers, EV motor trainers, EV battery trainers, simulators, and other essential EV-related components. This facility will be one of the most advanced EV labs in the Caribbean and will play a critical role in supporting the future scale-up of EV training and adoption initiatives in Belize.

Access to electricity is opening new possibilities for rural communities across Belize.

With support from the through Global Gateway, Belize Electricity Limited is gradually expanding energy access in Indian Church and San Carlos in the Orange Walk District, and in Jalacte, San Vicente, and San Benito Poite in the Toledo District.

Together, these efforts will help bring reliable electricity and renewable energy solutions to at least 2000 people, supporting families, students, businesses, health centers, schools, and public services in communities where electricity was not available before.
