Supporting the Health of Our BDF Soldiers!

Our Community Health Workers (CHWs) from the Central Health Region were out in the field today, providing health screening services to members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF).

From checking blood pressure and blood glucose to promoting healthy lifestyle practices, our CHWs continue to bring preventive health services directly to the people, including those who serve and protect our country.

Through art, the staff of Toledo District Health Services explored breastfeeding themes while creating a space to connect, reflect, and learn.

The session also highlighted an important message for workplaces: Supporting breastfeeding is supporting employee wellness. Creating a breastfeeding-friendly workplaces, where mothers have understanding, encouragement, and appropriate time and space to breastfeed or express breast milk can make the transition back to work easier and more supportive.

Sometimes, wellness is about taking a moment to paint, connect, and recharge. And sometimes, it is about using that moment to remind ourselves how we can create more supportive and healthier workplaces for everyone.

Supporting Mothers, Supporting Breastfeeding

Our Community Health Workers (CHWs) continue to work closely with women in their communities—those who are breastfeeding, those expecting to give birth soon, and women attending their prenatal check-ups.

Through conversations, education, encouragement, and practical support, our CHWs are helping women understand the importance of breastfeeding and the benefits it provides for both mother and baby.

Breastfeeding Month: Learning, Creativity & Community

This Breastfeeding Month, we’re also highlighting the creativity and commitment of our Community Health Workers (CHWs) who continue to bring health education directly into the communities they serve.

In Santa Familia, Cayo, the CHW, Ms. Marleni planned a breastfeeding session with the women in her community, creating a welcoming space for learning and meaningful conversation.

Our CHWs remind us that community leadership is about working with what you have. Through their own talents, the support of family and supervisors, and a deep understanding of their communities, they find creative ways to bring people together and make health education engaging and relevant.

Because sometimes, the most meaningful learning happens when community, creativity and empathy come together.

Strengthening Communication for Behaviour Change.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness recently participated in an 8-day Communication for Behavioural Impact (COMBI) training in Belize, designed to strengthen the skills of Health Educators, Nutritionists, Medical Officers, and Public Health Inspectors in using behavioural insights to develop communication programmes that achieve specific behaviour change, going beyond simply raising awareness and sharing information.

The training was offered by the City University of New York School of Public Health (CUNY/SPH) and the COMBI Institute, in collaboration with the University of West Indies, Belize.

We extend our sincere appreciation to PAHO Caribbean, UWI, Dr. Everold Hosien, and everyone who contributed to making this important capacity-building opportunity possible. Your support is helping strengthen our capacity to develop communication interventions that translate knowledge into meaningful action.

Supporting Breastfeeding in Our Communities!

This time, our Community Health Workers (CHWs) from the San Ignacio area are taking breastfeeding education directly to the communities of Los Tambos and 7 Miles El Progresso in Cayo.

Through these community-level sessions, mothers and families receive important information on the benefits of breastfeeding, practical support, and encouragement to make informed choices for the health and well-being of their babies.

We commend our CHWs for taking the lead in bringing health education closer to the people and creating spaces where mothers can learn, ask questions, and feel supported.

Learning, Connecting & Creating in La Gracia, Cayo! 🪡🌸

Our Community Health Worker, Mrs. Yolanda, brought women from La Gracia, Cayo together for an engaging embroidery activity, combining a craft they enjoy with meaningful health education on breastfeeding 🤱🏽

Through activities that reflect the interests and culture of the community, our CHWs continue to make health education fun, relatable, and community-centered.

A beautiful reminder that learning can happen while we create, connect, and support one another.
