The Belize Department of the Environment, otherwise known as DOE, is a regulatory Government Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development. It responsibilities fall under six Units, namely Environmental Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Unit, Project Evaluation/EIA Unit, Public Awareness and Outreach Unit, Environmental Law and Policy Unit, Information Management Unit and Project Ex*****on Unit.

Lodgement of an EIA Report and Public Consultation for Trans Americas Fiber System (TAFS) for the laying of a submarine fiber-optic cable system to interconnect Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras (not landing in Belize), passing through Belize’s territorial seas and partially through the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve (SCMR).

A public consultation will be held on Thursday, October 15th, 2026 at 6 pm at the Punta Gorda Sports Complex, Punta Gorda, Toledo District.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management (MSDCCSWM), through the GEF-6 Integrated Management of Production Landscapes to Deliver Multiple Global Environmental Benefits Project, and the BTR1 & BTR2/NC5 Projects, implemented in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is inviting qualified and interested firms and individual consultants to submit proposals for several consultancy opportunities.

1️⃣ Draft Regulations for the Operationalization of the National Integrated Water Resources Authority (NIWRA)
2️⃣ Develop a Pricing Strategy for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)

🌿🧹 Keeping Our Communities Clean, One Cleanup at a Time! 🇧🇿💚

The Department of the Environment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing (MIDH), carried out cleanup activities at several garbage sites across the Corozal District, including:

📍 Libertad Garbage Site – Concepción–Libertad Sugar Road
📍 San Joaquin Garbage Site – America–Calcutta Sugar Road
📍 Xaibe Garbage Site – Campa Sugar Road

These cleanup efforts help address improper waste disposal and promote cleaner, healthier surroundings for our communities. 🙏🏽🌎

Are you passionate about protecting Belize’s environment and inspiring others to take action? The Department of the Environment is seeking tertiary-level students and active community members to join our Community Ambassadors for the Environment Programme.

As an Environmental Ambassador, you will receive training, resources, and support to lead environmental awareness activities, engage your community, and promote sustainable practices.

✅ Benefits of Becoming an Ambassador

• Access training sessions and resources on sustainable resource use, waste management, and community engagement
• Build valuable professional and community networks
• Develop leadership and communication skills to strengthen your resume
• Create meaningful environmental change within your school and community

📌 Criteria to Become an Ambassador
Applicants must:
• Represent a tertiary institution or be an active community member
• Demonstrate an interest in environmental conservation and sustainability
• Be willing to participate in training sessions and Department-led activities
• Commit to conducting environmental outreach activities within their community or institution
• Possess good communication and teamwork skills

🚨 ENVIRONMENTAL UPDATE – YO CHEN VILLAGE

Following a recent report by Love FM regarding a garbage concern at the entrance of Yo Chen Village, the Department of the Environment (DOE) promptly investigated the matter and collaborated with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) to address the issue.

✅ The area has now been cleaned and placed under surveillance to help prevent a recurrence of this unfortunate situation.

⚠️ PUBLIC REMINDER:
Under the Pollution Regulations, it is an offence to place or permit refuse to be placed on any land without the written permission of the DOE.

We encourage community members to remain vigilant and report instances of illegal dumping at this or any other location so that the relevant authorities can take appropriate legal action against offenders.

🌎❄️ TWELVE STUDENTS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS UNDER THE RAC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME! 🔧🎓🇧🇿

Today, September 16, 2026, the Department of the Environment (DOE), through the National Ozone Unit, proudly awarded twelve scholarships under the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) Scholarship Programme. 🎉

The recipients, who are enrolled in RAC programmes at ITVETs in Belize City, Orange Walk, and Stann Creek, will receive support for the 2026–2027 academic year, including tuition, a toolbox of servicing tools, and personal protective equipment. 🧰🦺

👩‍🔧 Three of the twelve scholarship recipients are female trainees, representing an important step toward greater participation of women in the RAC sector.

This special ceremony was held in recognition of World Ozone Day, observed annually on September 16. 🌎💙 This year's theme, “Global Action for a Cooler Planet,” celebrates ten years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment.

As Belize continues its transition toward lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants and more efficient cooling technologies, skilled and well-trained technicians are essential. 🔧❄️ Through this programme, the DOE is investing in the next generation of RAC professionals who will help promote safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible cooling practices.

The Department of the Environment (DOE) was pleased to host a booth at the BCCI Expo on the final day of the event, engaging with visitors and sharing important information on environmental protection. 🌱♻️

We were also delighted to have Miss Earth Belize, Vashti Thomspon, join us in presenting key environmental information and helping to promote greater awareness of the importance of protecting Belize’s environment. 👑🌎💚

Today, the Department of the Environment was proud to participate in the 2026 BCCI Expo, engaging with members of the public and businesses to promote environmental awareness and responsible practices.

Our booth highlighted the National Anti-Littering Campaign, encouraging everyone to take responsibility for properly disposing of their waste and keeping our communities clean and beautiful. 🌱💚

👑🌎 We were also honored to be joined by Miss Earth Belize 2026, Vashti Thompson!
Vashti joined us in promoting environmental responsibility and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. Her presence helped amplify the message that every Belizean has a role to play in creating a cleaner and more sustainable Belize. 🇧🇿💚
