This Saturday (17/10) Goole Museum will host the launch of Out of Blue?, a collection of poetry written in and around Goole Museum as part of the Goole Poetry Project and Goole 200.

Please join us in the Master of the Masts exhibition at the Museum at 2pm, where you will be able to claim your free copy of the book. We will be joined by acclaimed northern poets reading from their work, including Charlotte Shevchenko Knight, Janine Bradbury, and Maia Elsner, as well as young poets whose poems feature in Out of Blue?

Readings will start at 2pm and will last approximately one hour, with tea and coffee provided. No need to book - just turn up and help us celebrate new writing about Goole!

East Riding Museums Business Plan Consultation Event

Following visitor surveys and internal development sessions, we are now ready to present the East Riding Museums Business Plan for 2026 to 2029 with our audiences.

A public consultation will take place in the Education Room at the Champney Treasure House, Beverley on Tuesday 20 October from 5.30pm to 7pm. Light refreshments will be provided. The Museum and Art Gallery will be open if participants would like to spend some of the time viewing our latest exhibitions. Members of the Museums team will be on hand to answer any questions about the Plan.

We look forward to meeting some of you at the session and sharing our Business Plan for East Riding Museums.

To mark the Bayeux Tapestry coming to the British Museum in London for the first time since it was created, Champey Treasure House Museum have put together a hand-crafted ‘Bayeux Around Britain: Dyed in History’ display.

The display features the ancient skills and crafts used to create the original Bayeux Tapestry which are still used to this day, showcasing modern connections to ancient times.

Now on display upstairs in the Champney Treasure House, the display case has been produced by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s museum team in partnership with the Battle of Stamford Bridge Heritage Society (BOSBHS) who have been researching how wool was dyed to make textiles like the Bayeux Tapestry nearly 1000 years ago.

The display case also features plants and minerals which would have been familiar to early civilisation when the Bayeux Tapestry was made between approximately 1070 to 1077 AD.

The original 70-metre-long Bayeux Tapestry is an internationally recognised art piece of great historic and cultural significance which depicts the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The tapestry is currently on loan to the British Museum until July 2027.

Champney Treasure House is free to enter, the display runs until Sunday, 11 July.

A new exhibition, ‘Playgrounds to Pixels: A Journey Through Play in Beverley’, opens at Beverley Guildhall on Wednesday, 7 October.

The free exhibition explores how childhood play has changed from the open fields and streets of the past to the digital worlds of today.

Drawing on local memories, historic photographs, and contemporary experiences, the exhibition traces Beverley's rich play heritage.

Visitors can discover traditional street games, free play on Westwood, Figham and Swinemoor, the development of playgrounds, family festivals, water games, toys through the ages, and the growing role of digital technology in children's lives.

Artist Talk at Goole Museum: Pete Donnelly
Saturday 26th September, 11am

Join Goole-born sculptor Pete Donnelly at Goole Museum for an illustrated talk exploring his creative process and the development of his recent Goole Bicentenary commission, now on permanent display at Goole Museum.

Pete will discuss how an idea develops into a finished sculpture, from early concepts and research through modelling, firing and surface treatment. He will also reflect on the relationship between creativity and wellbeing, the role sculpture has played within his own life, and some of the challenges and rewards of maintaining an artistic practice alongside work and family life.

The talk will also introduce a selection of Pete’s previous work, offering an insight into the themes, influences and techniques that have shaped his wider sculptural practice.

Goole Museum currently has no less than three exhibitions on show! Each focusses on a different aspect of Goole's history: Master of the Masts looks at the life and work of Goole's pierhead painter Reuben Chappell, Goole Unboxed explores the history of the town through archives, while The Beatles Pop Up tells the story of the Fab Four's infamous encounter in the town. We also have a brand new sculpture 'Where Ships Rest', which has been specially commisioned and created to celebrate Goole's Bicentenary.
