A new exhibition, âGoole 200: A History of Goole in 200 Objectsâ has been announced for Goole Museum. Starting on Saturday, 23 May, the brand-new exhibition is part of the townâs bicentenary celebrations. âGoole 200: A History of Goole in 200 Objectsâ explores two centuries of Gooleâs rich history through 200 weird and wonderful objects from the museumâs collections.
Nearly all of the artefacts on display were donated by members of the local community, so this exhibition is very much a celebration of the peopleâs history. Some of these fascinating artefacts tell the story of Gooleâs origins and growth as a port, alongside the development of other industries such as shipbuilding, alum working and clothes manufacturing. Other items are more personal, everyday objects and provide a window into childhood, home-life, healthcare and recreation in the town. In contrast, several objects shed light on the more dramatic episodes in Gooleâs past, including the World Wars and grand public celebrations. Visitors can also look out for the âspotlightâ objects, which are artefacts that reveal a particularly special story.
Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: âGoole 200 is a wonderful celebration of our town and its people. ââBy telling Gooleâs story through objects donated by local residents, this exhibition at Goole Museum brings our shared history to life in a way that feels personal, engaging and authentic. ââItâs a fitting centrepiece for our bicentenary celebrations and a fantastic opportunity for visitors of all ages to connect with Gooleâs past, present and future.â
The exhibition will open with a public launch event at 1pm on Saturday, 23 May, everyone is welcome to attend.
The exhibition will be on display until Saturday, 04 July.
