Goole Museum is hosting a series of FREE Poetry workshops, which are aimed at young people aged between 16 and 18 years.

Organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and funded by Arts Council England as part of the busy programme of events planned to mark our town's 200th birthday, the workshops will be led by acclaimed poets. They will enable participants to go behind the scenes at the museum, where they can explore the archives and learn to write about art, environment and local history. Poetry produced by those attending the workshops will be published in a collection, alongside the work of acclaimed poets.

Later in the summer, there will also be a further poetry workshop for others from the local community to attend, as well as a series of workshops for young people at The Moorlands Youth and Community Centre.

A new exhibition, ‘Goole 200: A History of Goole in 200 Objects’ has been announced for Goole Museum. Starting on Saturday, 23 May, the brand-new exhibition is part of the town’s bicentenary celebrations. ‘Goole 200: A History of Goole in 200 Objects’ explores two centuries of Goole’s rich history through 200 weird and wonderful objects from the museum’s collections.

Nearly all of the artefacts on display were donated by members of the local community, so this exhibition is very much a celebration of the people’s history. Some of these fascinating artefacts tell the story of Goole’s origins and growth as a port, alongside the development of other industries such as shipbuilding, alum working and clothes manufacturing. Other items are more personal, everyday objects and provide a window into childhood, home-life, healthcare and recreation in the town. In contrast, several objects shed light on the more dramatic episodes in Goole’s past, including the World Wars and grand public celebrations. Visitors can also look out for the ‘spotlight’ objects, which are artefacts that reveal a particularly special story.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “Goole 200 is a wonderful celebration of our town and its people. ‘’By telling Goole’s story through objects donated by local residents, this exhibition at Goole Museum brings our shared history to life in a way that feels personal, engaging and authentic. ‘’It’s a fitting centrepiece for our bicentenary celebrations and a fantastic opportunity for visitors of all ages to connect with Goole’s past, present and future.”

The exhibition will open with a public launch event at 1pm on Saturday, 23 May, everyone is welcome to attend.

The exhibition will be on display until Saturday, 04 July.

Summer Heat Wave of '76: Goole Museum Workshop
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 summer heat wave. Although usually remembered as a golden summer, the hot, dry weather also led to a water crisis. Goole Museum is looking for participants to join an interactive workshop at the museum on Thursday 7th May at 1pm. Particpants will delve into the 1976 heat wave and drought through newspaper articles and other archival material. They will also use creative methods, including collage making, to explore what drought means for us as a community and learn from the past to prepare for the future. 🌞 💧 🪣
