The OECS Commission participated in a side event at COP28 hosted by the Climate Mobility Pavilion titled “Immobility as an overlooked aspect in the loss and damage debate." Josette Edward-Charlemagne, Programme Officer of Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, represented the Commission. The event brought together representatives from several groups, including affected communities, academics, and policymakers, to discuss how loss and damage relate to the needs of immobile people and how the new loss and damage fund can support such needs to develop policy recommendations for the climate change and mobility community. Based on a categorisation of different types of immobility (voluntary versus involuntary, temporary versus permanent), the event explored the benefits and drawbacks of distinguishing between economic and non-economic loss and damage and whether immobility is a choice by people to avert or minimise non-economic loss and damage.
