The Baguio City Fire Station (BCFS) reported that fire incidents in the city for the first five months of this year dropped by more than 38 percent compared to the fires recorded during the same period last year.
BCFS Fire Marshal Fire Superintendent Mark Anthony Dangatan said there were 24 fire incidents reported from January to May this year compared to 39 fires recorded during the same period last year.
Dangatan made the report during the second quarter joint meeting of the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) and the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) held Wednesday at the City Hall multipurpose hall.
He stressed that the decrease reflects the positive impact of intensified fire prevention campaigns, strengthened fire code enforcement, and increased public awareness throughout the city.
The fire officer pointed out that residential fires decreased from 18 incidents in 2025 to 13 fires this year. Non-residential fires dropped from nine incidents to five fires, while forest fires also decreased from three to two incidents.
Further, Dangatan disclosed that grass fires declined from seven incidents in 2025 to four incidents this year.
He said smoking-related incidents were identified as the leading cause of fires last year, while electrical arcing emerged as the leading cause of fires this year, accounting for six incidents.
According to him, the estimated value of fire damages increased from P10.7 million last year to P16.4 million this year despite the significant drop in reported fire incidents for the current period.
On the other hand, Dangatan stated that there were three fire-related injuries and one fire-related fatality during the current period, highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness and public awareness. - Dexter A. See
