Did you know? New parental controls and teen protections are coming to Facebook and Instagram as part of a $17.1 billion multistate settlement with Meta. Maine is expected to receive at least $56 million under the agreement.

The changes include default daily time limits for teens, overnight restrictions, muted notifications during school hours, stronger age-verification measures and added protections against unwanted contact.

Parents will also have more control over certain account settings and safety protections.

Parents, not social media companies, should be in the best position to decide what is appropriate for their children. These new tools will give families more ability to supervise online activity, set boundaries and stay involved in how their children use social media.
