As school starts for most this week, Maine EMS wishes a happy first day to all students, families, teachers, administrators and school professionals. We hope your homework is easy the first week!

For the EMS professionals throughout Maine, please remember to use caution around school zones, bus stops, and school buses. State law requires that when school bus red lights are flashing, even when responding lights and sirens, you must stop your vehicle and wait until signaled to proceed either by direct signal from the school bus operator or the red lights stop flashing.

The Maine EMS Awards Ceremony was held yesterday at the State House in Augusta. Special thanks to Friends of EMS for Maine for the Memorial Service preceeding the Award ceremony, and honoring those who have come before us. Both events had an amazing and wonderful group of clinicians, students, families, leaders, and stakeholders. So many stories, laughs, and sadly, tears for those we have lost. What is most incredible was that every person there has been an integral part of supporting our statewide EMS system. The patches on uniforms may be different but our mission is the same - improving the care of the residents and visitors to Maine. Truly a tremendous group representing all areas of the state. It was a privilege to recognize so many of the talents. dedication, and excellence in EMS in our communities.

The Maine Emergency Medical Services’ Board is proposing to repeal and replace its existing chapter of rules addressing Drugs and Medications (Maine EMS Rules Chapter 6). This rulemaking is intended to update current rules to align them with recent changes to the federal regulatory structure surrounding controlled substances, and changes to State law resulting from P.L. 2026 c. 654. This rulemaking is intended to update and clarify provisions of rule to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public, related to the storage, supply, recordkeeping, administration, and inspection of drugs and medications.

Maine EMS is seeking public input and comments regarding these proposed changes, and the opportunity is open until Friday, September 18, 2026, at 11:59 PM EST
