Maine EMS is saddened to share the passing of David Tauber. Dave was most recently the paramedic program director at Southern Maine Community College. He also has a tremendous history in New Hampshire as a paramedic instructor and taught countless EMS clinicians over his lengthy career. We wish our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues and students. Thank you Dave for your years of teachings and inspiration.

With profound sadness, SMCC shares the news of the passing of our colleague, David Tauber.

David was a valued member of the Southern Maine Community College community and the dedicated program chair of our EMS and Paramedicine programs. His career in emergency medical services began in 1971, and he became a paramedic in 1980. Over more than five decades of service, David worked in municipal Fire-Rescue, served as a medic and hazmat technician on a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue task force, led a 911 EMS agency, and worked in high-volume urban, suburban, rural and wilderness rescue systems.

An EMS instructor since 1976, David helped educate and prepare generations of emergency medical professionals. He directed several paramedic programs, including eight years as program director at Yale New Haven Hospital/Yale School of Medicine, and held a bachelor’s degree in EMS Management from George Washington University.

Through his commitment to education, service and the healthcare profession, David helped prepare countless students for careers dedicated to helping others in their moments of greatest need. His contributions to the College, our students and the EMS community will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to David’s family, friends, colleagues, students and all those whose lives he touched. Please keep David’s loved ones and members of our EMS and Paramedicine community in your thoughts during this difficult time.

From Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center

Due to heavy traffic we are asking all ambulances who are not delivering patients directly to the Emergency Room to please pull ahead to the ambulance parking area.

We have had several instances of transfer trucks blocking all 3 of our ambulance bays, making it harder for our 911 trucks to get in and making them back up into traffic to respond from the ER.

Great job!

On April 29th, 2026, at 15:03 hours, ECS Carter received a 911 call for a 44-year-old male who had passed out and stopped breathing. After guiding the caller through a breathing diagnostic and determining that the patient's breathing was ineffective, ECS Carter immediately began providing CPR instructions. During resuscitation efforts, the caller and another individual on scene repeatedly reported that the patient’s heart rate appeared to be increasing.

ECS Carter recognized this as a likely result of effective chest compressions and encouraged them to continue CPR. When the callers became distracted, ECS Carter politely redirected their focus and had them count aloud to ensure they maintained a proper pace.

EMS arrived on scene and transported the patient for further treatment.

Outstanding work by ECS Carter demonstrating professionalism, composure, and commitment to life-saving care. Well Done!

Every 5 years, the national EMS for Children program surveys every Emergency Department in the US for aspects of pediatric readiness, including pediatric education, resources, quality improvement, and policies. The aim is a snapshot of care both nationally, regionally, and by state. Participation by EDs was voluntary, and we are grateful for the 19 EDs that participated (of the 35 EDs in Maine), but disappointed that we did not have more (VT, NH, CT and RI all had 100% participation). The Maine EMS for Children program was pleased to recognize MaineHealth Waldo Hospital for their pediatric readiness today. The ED staff reviewed, developed, implemented and exceeded standards of equipment, education, policy development, and quality metrics. Utilizing evidence based criteria developed by the AAP, ACEP, ENA, and ACS, the ED is continuing their commitment to community care. Congratulations!!!

Given the ongoing impact on so many of our united Public Safety Community by the recent tragedies in Searsmont and Avon, Maine EMS has coordinated with the Friends of EMS for Maine and made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming Maine EMS Memorial and Awards ceremonies scheduled for this coming Thursday, May 21, at the Capitol grounds in Augusta.

We hope to reschedule these important gatherings. In this moment, our hearts and thoughts are with the families, responders, and loved ones as they weather these difficult times.
