To wrap up pruning season, the Maine Forest Service and Maine Conservation Corps partnered with Bolduc Correctional Facility for a full day of learning and hands-on work in the facilityโ€™s apple orchard on April 6.

A team of 2 Maine Forest Service staff, 9 Maine Conservation Corps staff and members, 6 residents, and 9 facility staff came together to learn fruit tree pruning techniques and then applied those skills to almost 60 apple trees.

Participants asked excellent questions, shared observations, and showed real enthusiasm for building new skills. The energy, curiosity, and teamwork from everyone made this event a clear success and a meaningful step toward a healthier, more productive orchard at Bolduc.

The Maine winter hasn't slowed down our Community Tree Stewards from launching service projects for their local communities. Since January, they have been leading orchard pruning workshops, developing forest management plans, and tackling invasives species.
