"For 25 years, the Maine Senior FarmShare Program has connected older adults with fresh, locally grown food while providing meaningful support to Maine farmers. Federal Farm Bill funding makes this program possible, but Maine's strong outcomes, including high redemption rates, strong farmer participation, and clear need, show why continued investment in senior nutrition and local agriculture matters." — Commissioner Amanda Beal

The MSFS anniversary will be recognized at the 2026 Maine Agricultural Trades Show, taking place from Tuesday, January 13, to Thursday, January 15, at the Augusta Civic Center. Displays will feature photographs and quotes from participating farmers and seniors, honoring the farmers whose commitment has made the program's success possible.

The Ag Trades Show is free to attend. Learn more at https://www.maine.gov/dacf/agtradesshow.

Onions!
This week’s “What’s In Season – Specialty Crop Spotlight” is on onions.
Savory onions are a fixture in most kitchens. Fresh, delicate onions are available beginning in June. Later in the season, larger onions appear. These are often dried for storage and will be available all winter. Store them in a cool, dry, dark place. (Keep your onions well away from potatoes, though, or gases from the onions will make the potatoes sprout.)

Try this “root cellar” French onion soup recipe from Real Maine member Cheryl Wixson's Kitchen at Rabbit Hill Farm: https://www.rabbithillfarmmaine.com/root-cellar-french-onion-soup/
