The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) and Milbridge-based blueberry grower Wyman's have completed a successful partnership to improve fish passage for alewives into Bog Brook Flowage on the Narraguagus River, helping restore an important native fish run while supporting Maine’s coastal economy.

Wyman’s worked collaboratively with DMR to install fish passage improvements on a dam located at the western end of the wetland, ahead of this year’s annual alewife migration.

Our friends at the Maine Coast Fishermen's Association and Manomet want YOU to help gather data on black sea bass in Maine. While there is no active commercial fishery for this species currently, fishermen report seeing more and more black sea bass in Maine waters. The goal is to use this data to inform fishery management decisions and help fishermen and seafood businesses prepare for a future directed fishery. Participation incentives are available.

Learn more at www.mainecoastfishermen.org/black-sea-bass, and submit your sightings at https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/162f6d49459c4c0cafac9fbb1f767202

Ride the Fish Bus!

Maine DMR’s Bureau of Sea-Run Fish & Habitat is excited to sponsor Alewife Days again in Spring 2026. This program helps elementary and high school classes across Maine visit active alewife fish runs and witness the incredible spring migrations happening in our rivers and lakes.

From alewives climbing fish ladders to sturgeon leaping in the Kennebec and Androscoggin, spring is full of life and we want students to experience it firsthand. From late April (coastal and southern streams) through early June (Downeast and Inland streams) fish, eagles, osprey and other wildlife crowd Maine’s river corridors. In 2025, schools traveled to their local fish runs from Yarmouth to Calais, and we hope to expand even further this year!

We are inviting schools to apply for transportation support to nearby fish runs. Funding is limited, so be sure to register early:

2026 is also a World Fish Migration Day year! Join the global celebration and register your visit as an official event (optional):
