Yesterday afternoon, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for an automatic fire alarm. Shortly after dispatch, the alarm was upgraded to a reported structure fire following additional calls reporting smoke inside the building.

Engine 7 arrived shortly thereafter and encountered a moderate smoke condition believed to be coming from an HVAC unit on the roof. Crews from Bohemia and the Lakeland Fire Department accessed the roof and located a burned-out motor within one of the HVAC units.

The situation was quickly brought under control with no further extension reported.

Great job by all members operating on scene. All units operated under the command of Chief Moreau and Lieutenant Haynes. Thank you to Lakeland FD, Holbrook FD, and Community Ambulance for your assistance.

This past Sunday, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a reported vehicle fire during the early morning hours.

All Chiefs, along with Engine 7 and Engine 1, quickly responded. Upon arrival, units encountered a fully involved vehicle. The crew of Engine 7 stretched a handline and quickly brought the fire under control.

All units operated under the command of Acting Chief of Department Scott Mistler.

Great work by all members on scene!

The Bohemia Fire Department is proud to announce the return of our Junior Firefighter Program! 🔥

If you’re between the ages of 14 and 17 and have ever wanted to learn what it takes to serve your community, this is your opportunity. Our Junior Program is designed to build confidence, leadership, teamwork, and real-world skills while introducing members to the fire service in a safe, hands-on environment.

Throughout the program, you’ll learn:
🚒 Fire hose operations
🪜 Ladders and tools
🪢 Knots and ropes
🩹 First Aid / CPR
🤝 Teamwork and leadership

Last night, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a reported interior odor of gas at a commercial warehouse.

Upon arrival, Acting Chief of Department Mistler encountered a strong odor of natural gas and confirmed elevated gas readings. Crews from Truck 6, Tower 3, and Rescue 10 conducted a thorough investigation and located a broken gas line feeding a warehouse heater. The leak had allowed natural gas to accumulate throughout the building.

Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of our members, the gas leak was identified, the hazard was mitigated, and the scene was turned over safely. Incidents involving natural gas can become extremely dangerous if left undetected, making rapid response and thorough investigation critical.

Excellent work by all members operating on scene, and thank you to our mutual aid and utility partners for their assistance.

A special thank you to the members of True North Community Church for recognizing that something wasn’t right and immediately notifying 9-1-1. Their quick action and vigilance played a critical role in allowing crews to respond before the situation had the potential to become much more dangerous. Great job by everyone involved.

Due to wildfire smoke from other parts of the region, residents in and around Bohemia may notice a smoky smell in the air over the next several hours. While there is no active fire emergency in our community, the smoke has impacted local air quality.

Those most sensitive to smoke—including children, older adults, individuals with heart or lung conditions, and anyone with respiratory illnesses—should consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity until conditions improve.

To help protect yourself:
• Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
• Limit strenuous outdoor activities if you are experiencing symptoms.
• If you develop persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or chest discomfort, seek medical attention.

The Bohemia Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.

Working House Fire – July 12, 2026

At approximately 6:00 PM on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the Bohemia Fire Department was activated for a reported house fire.

The first arriving units were met with heavy fire throughout the residence. Firefighters immediately stretched multiple handlines and launched an aggressive interior and exterior attack to bring the main body of fire under control. Crews remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hidden pockets of fire and conducting extensive overhaul to ensure the incident was completely mitigated.

The operation was conducted under the command of Captain Frank Caputo.

Saturday July 11th, members of the Bohemia Fire Department attended the Suffolk County Firefighters Parade in Bayshore and a ParaTech Training Class, in addition to handling several emergencies throughout the day.

The class featured topics on pressurized airbags for lifting heavy objects, shoring in the event of a building collapse and stabilizing vehicles to allow personnel to remove trapped occupants in auto accidents.
