Empowering youth and families through connection, self-efficacy, and independence. These youth frequently have not had the influence of a stable caring adult.

The Matthews House Program Descriptions

The Youth Program serves youth ages 16-21 who lack significant family support in their lives as they transition into adulthood. Many are or have been part of the foster care system or have been involved in the juvenile justice system. The Matthews House provides the resources and support necessary to empower these youth to take control of their lives, shape positive futures for themselves and become successful contributors to their community. Strengthening Families Program is a voluntary program that provides one-on-one facilitation to help at risk families build resiliency and navigate difficulties in the areas of parenting, money management, job readiness and healthy relationships. This short term service (typically 3 to 6 months) increases self-sufficiency of families, reduces the need for children to be removed to out-of-home placements such as foster care and breaks the very cycle that leads youth to need our youth transition services later in life. Building Community at The Matthews House Community Life Center (CLC) opened in July 2012 and was created through a collaboration with Poudre School District and the Department of Human Services, the CLC is currently located at Fullana Early Learning Center, 220 N Grant Avenue. This Center serves as a consolidated location for vital services and specialized, enriching programs for families so that barriers are reduced and families can attain what they need to learn, improve and become stronger-and in turn, make our community stronger.

As a teenager, Paula used to wonder how her parents could be so generous when they had, by her count, so little. 📍
Looking back, the answer was right there at the dinner table. The Meals on Wheels route. The extra guests. A dad who never met a stranger. None of it came with a speech. She just watched, and it stuck.

Remember Paula? Here's where that dinner table with an extra seat led. 📍
At 9, she started babysitting with her older sister. At 16, she got her first real job. She became the first in her family to graduate from college, then spent 35 years building a small chain of restaurants with her husband while raising three kids.
Where did that drive come from? In her words, it’s because she was taught, loved, and encouraged as she grew up.
It led Paula to work hard and follow her dreams, but unfortunately not every young person in Northern Colorado gets that kind of foundation. That's exactly why The Matthews House exists.

Every stop has a story. This week, it's Paula's. 📍
Board member. Restaurant owner. Mom of three.
But long before any of that, she was a little girl riding along on her mom's Meals on Wheels route and sitting at a dinner table that always had room for one more.
"We never had extra of anything, but we always had exactly what we needed."
Her parents didn't have much. What they had, they shared. And before Paula could even put a name to it, they were showing her how to show up for people.
That lesson carried her further than she ever expected, all the way to The Matthews House. Over the next few days, we'll share where it led. 🚌

We are looking for a Bilingual Family Resource Navigator (Spanish/English) to join our Children & Family team! This position is a hands-on, full-time position helping families access the resources and supports they need to strengthen stability, well-being, and self-sufficiency. By building trusting relationships and working closely with internal programs and community partners, the Bilingual Family Resource Navigator helps families connect to timely, relevant, and sustainable supports that promote long-term success.

Here's where Blessing's story is headed. 📍
With support from The Landing, she graduated high school, something she once doubted would happen. Today, she's studying at Front Range Community College and Colorado State University, working toward a science degree and eyeing a future in biotechnology.
Her advice for anyone arriving at The Landing scared and unsure, the way she once was:
"It's okay to be sad sometimes. It's not the end of the world. It's okay to feel sad, but keep going."

Growing up largely on her own, Blessing learned to rely on herself. Letting people in? That was harder. 📍
At The Landing, she watched other young women work toward their goals. One of them moved into her own place, giving her hope for the future. Little by little, Blessing started to trust the people around her, and she says that's the biggest thing she carries with her today.

Remember Blessing? Here's where that phone call led. 📍
She called a women's shelter, and they pointed her to The Landing, Northern Colorado's only youth shelter. Getting connected was as simple as one phone call.
Settling in was not as simple. Shared living, house rules, a whole new routine. Change has never come easily to Blessing. But the staff kept showing up, and slowly, she started to see The Landing as a resource, not a reminder of what went wrong.

Every stop has a story. This week, it's Blessing's. 📍
She grew up in Zimbabwe. In 2024, she moved to the U.S. to live with her dad, hoping for a fresh start.
It didn't go the way she planned. Suddenly she was in a brand new country with nowhere to stay and everyone she knew on the other side of the world.
She booked a hotel room, picked up the phone, and started looking for help.
Over the next few days, we'll share where that one call led. 🚌

"I wish there had been a Matthews House when I was growing up." 📍
It's something we hear again and again from the people who support this work. Some of them know what it's like to travel a hard stretch alone. Others know exactly how much it mattered to have someone in their corner, and can't imagine facing life's biggest transitions without that.
Either way, they're choosing to walk beside someone else now.

Every journey has a first stop. Ours was a park bench. 📍
More than 20 years ago, our founder struck up a conversation with a young man sitting in Old Town. He had just aged out of foster care, with no resources and no idea where to go next.
She didn't just wish him well. She made it her mission to help him find his way. That one conversation eventually became The Matthews House.
Today, we walk beside children, youth, and families across Northern Colorado, from afterschool programs and parent support to The Landing, Northern Colorado's only youth shelter.
