Yesterday, Senator Moriwaki and I surprised Principal Zakahi during Jefferson Elementary School’s awards ceremony to honor his incredible service and congratulate him on his retirement.

For years, Principal Zakahi has been a dedicated leader, mentor, and advocate for Jefferson’s students, teachers, and families. His commitment to education and the school community has made a lasting impact on generations of students.

Mahalo, Principal Zakahi, for your years of service and for the difference you’ve made in so many lives. We wish you all the best in this next chapter and a well-deserved retirement!

Yesterday, I had to opportunity to join fourth year students from the H.O.M.E Leadership elective as part of their curriculum to interview and talk story with a community leader. We discussed the importance of honesty, authenticity, imposter syndrome, and different leadership styles. Mahalo to Dr Omori, Dr. Kosasa, and the students for inviting me to join them and for organizing the evening’s event. It was incredible to meet with students about to start their residency programs, congratulations and best of luck.

The Human Tracking Awareness Program (HB1960 HD2 SD1) has officially passed in conference!
This bill focuses on preventing human trafficking by making sure workers in hotels and other transient accommodations know what to look for and how to respond. Employers and contractors will now be responsible for training their staff, keeping records, posting awareness signage, and putting clear reporting policies in place.

My thanks goes out to the Women’s Legislative Caucus and the visitor industry for championing this bill across the finish line.

Today and myself opened on bail to develop a Human Tracking Awareness Program ( HB1960 HD2 SD1 ). The bill will require the Department of the Attorney General to create a Human Trafficking Awareness Training Program focused on workers in the transient accommodations sector. Employers and contractors will be responsible for:
• Providing regular training to staff and contract workers
• Keeping records of completed training
• Posting awareness signage
• Implementing clear policies for identifying and reporting suspected trafficking
The Department of Law Enforcement will also establish rules to support enforcement, with penalties in place for noncompliance.
By equipping frontline workers with the knowledge to recognize and report warning signs, this effort strengthens prevention and accountability where it’s needed most.

We’re in the final stretch of the legislative session. Fingers crossed for the bills that can make a difference!
