The Harris County Elections Administration Language Assistance Program (LAP), which was created to ease access for voters who speak a language other than English, is seeking committee members.

The LAP is comprised of 12 committees currently working on translating voter registration forms into 12 languages in addition to the current forms in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese. The standing committees represent the Arabic, Bengali, Farsi, French, Igbo, Punjabi, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Tamil, Urdu, and Yoruba languages.

The Urdu translation committee will hold its community meeting August 9 at 7 p.m. and invites the public to join in a virtual discussion to provide feedback on the proposed Urdu translation. Most recently, the Punjabi and Bengali committees held community meetings July 20 and 29 respectively.

The U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention’s eviction moratorium expires Saturday. But the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has started, as of today, a national list of programs that offer rental assistance to tenants and landlords who are unable to continue making or collecting rent payments due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CFPB has identified two such programs to which eligible renters and landlords may apply: A Houston-Harris County program and a state of Texas program.
