Congratulations to all the Norfolk breweries who were recognized at the 2022 Golden Tap Awards presented by VEER Magazine this week! It's time for another Small Business Spotlight! If you've ever shopped at Cardinal Skate Shop, you know there's more to it than meets the eye. Owner Jason Hawkes has put all his effort into making it a place where the local skating community can come together. The City of Norfolk officially announced a new, expanded partnership with Carnival Cruise Line! We are thrilled to be expecting around 240,000 passengers on these cruises by 2023 and year-round service by 2025. This expansion has a predicted economic impact of $60.7 million and is going to take Norfolk tourism to the next level.

Today was an exciting and historic day in Norfolk as we celebrated the expansion of Healthcare Management Firm, ARDX.
ARDX®, a government healthcare management and technology consulting firm, will invest $2.4 million to relocate and expand in the City of Norfolk.

The Keep It Local Business Fund has just been announced as a new grant program that will be awarding $5,000 grants to small businesses. The Nextdoor Kind Foundation has launched this program with the goal of empowering communities at a local level. Beginning November 14 through December 16, eligible small businesses in Norfolk can apply for a grant through the link below.

Norfolk Food Ecosystem, established by the St. Paul's Community Development Corp, has been awarded part of a $120,000 grant from the Virginia Food Access Investment Fund. Luke Downing and Matt Bakey started their IT Service company in Norfolk in 2002 and have since expanded their services to the entire Hampton Roads area and Northern VA/D.C. areas. Their headquarters remains in Norfolk at 350 W 22nd Street, Suite 106.
Revenue, profit, and customer satisfaction were all taken into account when considering rankings, which is "a testament to the hard work our team has done for our clients,” said Finance President Luke Downing.

Today marks a historic, innovative milestone in Norfolk, as CHKD opens the new Children’s Pavilion- an inpatient mental health hospital. Their mission to bring Health, Healing, and Hope to All Children has begun, as the first 12-bed inpatient mental health unit is officially open. All 60 private rooms will be open by the middle of next year. Outpatient services in the Children's Pavilion began in April.

Spirit Airlines to debut at Norfolk airport in March, offer daily flights to south Florida
Beginning March 8, 2023, Spirit Airlines' yellow planes will offer daily, nonstop flights from Norfolk to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, as well as connecting flights to other locations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Last week, our Military Affairs Liaison and retired U.S. Navy Captain traveled to Richmond, VA to accept the Virginia Values Veterans (V3) Secretary's Award. Norfolk was among 14 of 2,106 eligible employers to receive an award. Since 2018, Norfolk programs have reached more than 8,400 veterans and their spouses with numerous fellowship and aid programs. The Development Department is appreciative of this acknowledgement and plans continue this working relationship with the veterans of Norfolk.
As the first day of IEDC begins in OKC, we are looking forward to gaining some innovated knowledge and networking with industry experts and leaders. Some of our Norfolk ED Team are hitting the pavement to bring back the latest and greatest.

In Honor of National Beer Lovers Day, there’s no better time to shine a spotlight on Bold Mariner Brewing Company for this week’s small business! With quality at the forefront of his mind, veteran Michael Stacks made it his mission to create beers that the people of Norfolk would know and love. Established in 2015, the brewers at Bold Mariner now create endless amounts of unique craft beer inside their repurposed Bank building located in Oceanview. Equality in healthcare is a major journey that the Sentara team is determined to accomplish. On Monday, August 29th the City of Norfolk and the Department of Development celebrated the grand opening of Sentara Mobile Care and Sentara Community Care Centers. Historical communities in Norfolk that are often underserved will now have easier access to primary healthcare, therapy, and additionally needed services in the future.
As the sun sets and a new month begins, we bid adieu to a wonderful colleague and passionately driven leader. Jared Chalk isn't going far, so we will just say "see you soon".
Over the years his accomplishments have been remarkable, and skills often unmatched.
He has helped cultivate a powerhouse team in our department, to include talented, well-prepared Interim Director, Sean Washington.
We look forward to watching Jared grow our region, and aspire to even greater heights. Congratulations, Jared! Parting is not sorrowful when the future is destined for greatness.
