Water-Wise Landscaping: Practical Tips for Drought Conditions

📊Tip #5: Track Every Drop—Use a Rain Gauge to Water Smarter

During the growing season (April–September), most vegetable crops need about 1 inch of water per week—enough to moisten the soil 5–6 inches deep. Some crops, like tomatoes and muskmelon, may need up to 2 inches per week for best production. Use a rain gauge or local weather data to track rainfall and supplement with irrigation as needed.

Water-Wise Landscaping: Practical Tips for Drought Conditions

🟫 Tip #4: Mulch Your Gardens
Apply and maintain a 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch (coarse leaves, shredded bark, pine needles, or wood chips) to help your garden thrive. Mulch works hard for you by:
• 💧 Improving soil structure as it breaks down and increasing soil water holding capacity
• 🌡️ Regulating soil temperature to reduce evaporation
• 🚫 Suppressing weeds that compete for water

♻️ As a bonus, mulch recycles plant materials that might otherwise end up in the landfill!
