Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School

Washington Yu Ying was founded by parents in 2008 on two simple premises: 1. economic and political connections to China become increasingly intertwined.

Washington Yu Ying PCS, a Chinese-immersion, public charter, IB World School strives to inspire and prepare young people to create a better world by challenging them to reach their full potential in a nurturing Chinese/English educational environment. Fluency in more than one language develops a greater ability to communicate with and to understand other cultures; and 2. Mandarin Chinese—spoken by

one in five people worldwide—is an important language for American children to learn, especially as U.S.

This year, Yu Ying launched our first First Lego League (FLL) Robotics teams. Huge shoutout and appreciation to Amy Hariani (YY parent) for her dedication for launching this program. And lots of thanks to our parent volunteers and DCI mentors. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Across all programs, teams exercised the FLL core values at practices and final competitions, ensuring that learning, collaboration, and character-building were at the core of robotics. Through this hands-on experience, our older teams built and coded robots while also working on an innovation project where they identified a problem faced by archaeologists and proposed a solution that could help. Through building and learning about real-world topics, our younger teams built foundational skills, like critical thinking and collaboration. We look forward to another fun-filled robotics season next year!

This week, some of Class of 2026 Yu Ying alumni returned to campus to visit former teachers, reconnect with friends, and share advice with our 5th graders. Seeing the thoughtful, accomplished young people they’ve become is one of the clearest reflections of the impact of a Yu Ying education.

During their visit, we were thrilled to hear about the many Senior Awards they earned, recognizing everything from exemplifying IB learner traits and academic diligence to being named DP Student of the Year. We were especially proud to learn that, among DCI’s graduating seniors, four valedictorians and three salutatorians were Yu Ying alumni.

Yu Ying families showed up loud and proud to the DC Council meeting today to demand that ALL public school students get equal funding next year, including the city’s nearly 50,000 public charter school students.

Still feeling the love from our school gala: A Night in the Enchanted Forest ✨ and wow, did our Yu Ying community show up.

Together, we raised more than $174K to support our new teacher salary scale beginning next school year.

YY Community — we did it! The forest may have been enchanted, but our community is the real magic. 💙

Thank you to our amazing Parent Association for showering our team with love all week long! A special shoutout to volunteer extraordinaire Kim Tignor for leading this huge effort. Also, thank you to our adorable four-legged friends for the smiles and snuggles 🐾

Most of all, we are grateful for our teachers and staff, whose care, dedication, and heart make Yu Ying such a special place every day.

You can thank our Yu Ying Girl Scouts, led by a kindergartener’s idea, for organizing an Earth Day street clean-up. The girls were so proud to care for their community, and we’re grateful to the GS volunteers who joined them!

A first for Yu Ying 💍 Two of our EYC teaching fellows, Haoyu and Ruibo Laoshi of Hippo and Dog Class, just got engaged!

We’ve had couples meet at Yu Ying but a proposal on campus? That’s a first.

p.s. Still amazed Panda Laoshi kept it a secret (she is too 😄).
