Congresswoman Lateefah Simon

Congresswoman Lateefah Simon Official Account for Congresswoman Lateefah Simon. Representing California's 12th Congressional District.

On July 1, changes to federal student loan borrowing and repayment for current and future borrowers took effect as a result of Republicans' One Ugly, Cruel Bill.

I know that these changes will heavily impact borrowers in our district, but my team is here to help you. Visit https://simon.house.gov/federal-student-loan-faqs-and-info for more information or contact our District Office at 510-763-0370.

I believe that everyone should have access to an affordable education, and I will continue fighting for our students in Congress.

San Leandro, thank you to the community members who came out to my town hall this week and shared your concerns.

Your voices ground my work in Washington, and I am carrying your stories with me as I continue to fight attacks on our civil and human rights.

Keep an eye out for future town halls in cities across the district and save my district team’s number, (510) 763-0370, in case you ever need assistance in the future.

Our district has a deep history of disability activism and is the birthplace of the modern disability rights movement.

I was honored to welcome Dr. Pineda from Center for Independent Living, Inc. to Washington this month to talk about some of our heroes in the disability justice space, amplify the lived experiences of people with disabilities, and discuss the work yet to be done to advance our fight. This month and always, I will continue to stand with our partners and fight for the resources and support that the disability community deserves. Happy Disability Pride Month!

On June 4th, President Trump announced $75 million in federal funding for a coal export terminal in West Oakland.

I immediately filed an amendment to the FY 2027 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill to prohibit funding for the project, but House Republicans blocked the amendment.

Last week, I continued to fight and joined my California colleauges in demanding the Government Accountability Office open an investigation into the Trump Administration’s use of the Defense Production Act for the bulk coal export terminal in Oakland.

The East Bay is clear: no coal in Oakland. I am carrying those voices with me as I challenge this project and advocate for the health and wellbeing of our communities.

As the first congenitally blind member of Congress, it is central to my work to bring the voices of people with disabilities to the policy making table.

As Republicans try to dismantle our hard-won rights and protections, we are organized and fighting back together — in every community, classroom, and here in the halls of Congress. Thank you National Council on Independent Living for this powerful gathering, let’s get to work.

Republicans spent this week in D.C. attacking diversity and equity - instead of focusing on the issues that are impacting our communities every day or helping Americans who are struggling to put food on the table and afford healthcare and childcare.

We know the real purpose of these hearings: to go after communities of color and the lawyers who are doing their job and holding President Trump accountable to the law. Congress should focus on the issues that we were elected to address - not acting as a personal revenge campaign for the President.

I voted HELL NO on the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act. Our national security depends on more than military strength. It depends on whether families can afford housing, access healthcare, send their children to good schools, and live with dignity and opportunity.
