Re-Gilding Project for Buddha Dordenma Statue at Kuenselphodrang

The Royal Government of Bhutan is pleased to announce the commencement of the re-gilding and surface restoration of the sacred Buddha Dordenma Statue at Kuenselphodrang, Thimphu. Consecrated in 2015, the monument serves as a cherished sanctuary of peace, worship, and pilgrimage for devotees across Bhutan and around the globe.
This restoration is being undertaken as a sacred offering to honour the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

The initiative will renew the exterior finish and ensure the monument's preservation for generations to come. Works include surface preparation, application of durable gold-toned protective coatings, and the delicate application of genuine gold leaf across sacred features, including the Buddha’s face and Ushnisha.

The project is scheduled for completion by 31 October 2026.
Visitor Advisory: To ensure safety during these intricate restoration works, access to the main temple and immediate surrounding grounds will be restricted until 31 October 2026. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to local residents, pilgrims, and international visitors for their patience, understanding, and continued support while we care for this magnificent monument.

Individuals, organisations, institutions and well-wishers who wish to participate in the initiative are warmly invited to make offerings of gold or financial contributions from 5 September to 31 October 2026.

The Prime Minister attended the opening ceremony of the CAVA Beach Volleyball Bhutan Tour 2026 and met with the participating teams from across the region. He extended his best wishes to all the athletes and participants taking part in the tournament.

Upon Royal Command of His Majesty The King, Bhutan has contributed INR. 100 million to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund of Nepal in the wake of the devastating floods of 26 August, which resulted in the tragic loss of many lives and widespread damage.

The contribution is a gesture of solidarity and friendship with the Government and people of Nepal at this difficult time and reflects the warm and longstanding relations between Bhutan and
Nepal.

H.E. Maj. Gen. Vetsop Namgyel, Ambassador of Bhutan to Nepal, handed over the cheque to Dr. Surendra Thapa, Charge d' Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi.

The Royal Government and people of Bhutan extend their deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster. Bhutan stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and conveys its sincere wishes for the swift recovery and rehabilitation of the affected communities.

Ms. Mary Robinson, Founder of Project Dandelion and former President of Ireland, called on the Prime Minister yesterday on the sidelines of the Global Conscious Food Systems Summit.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on advancing women’s leadership and strengthening the role and participation of women in agriculture and farming.

Mr. Tadahiko Konoike, Honorary Consul of Bhutan in Kinki region, Japan, along with members of his delegation, called on the Prime Minister today in his capacity as the Honorary Consul.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship and goodwill between Bhutan and Japan, as well as on opportunities for further cooperation between the two countries.

The Prime Minister attended the inaugural Global Conscious Food Systems Summit in Paro, held in the distinguished presence of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya; former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; former President of Ireland Mary Robinson; and more than 400 Bhutanese and international participants from over 60 countries.

The five-day summit, held from 31 August to 4 September 2026, is jointly hosted by the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Conscious Food Systems Alliance and UNDP under the theme “Activating the Heart of Food Systems Transformation.”
Addressing the opening, the Prime Minister invited participants to look beyond what is on their plates and recognise the people, resources and effort behind every meal.

“When we next sit down for a meal, perhaps we might pause for just a moment. And see not only what is on the plate, but everything, and everyone, behind it.”
The Prime Minister said a conscious food system must nourish people, secure dignified livelihoods for farmers, create opportunities for youth, strengthen the economy and protect the natural resources on which agriculture depends.

Highlighting Bhutan’s agrifood transformation, the AgriSustain Fund and the vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City, he emphasised that investment, knowledge, technology and markets must be guided by values—and that consciousness must translate into action.

At a time when hunger, malnutrition, climate change and biodiversity loss are placing increasing pressure on global food systems, the summit seeks to advance sustainable, equitable and regenerative approaches to how food is produced, valued and consumed.

The Prime Minister met Her Excellency Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the sidelines of the Global Conscious Food Systems Summit in Paro this afternoon.

The two Prime Ministers discussed matters of mutual interest, including opportunities for investment. The Prime Minister warmly welcomed Her Excellency to Bhutan and thanked her for participating in this important Summit.

The Prime Minister spoke with Fiona Harvey of the Guardian on the Global Conscious Food Systems Summit being held in Paro, Bhutan from 1-3 September 2026.

The Guardian quoted the Prime Minister ‘“Food lies at the intersection of many of the defining challenges of our time – hunger, poor nutrition, poverty, climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasingly food security is also being disrupted by conflict and geopolitical instability. Our central message is simple: transforming our food systems requires both inner and outer change.’

28 August 2026: His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Her Majesty The Queen, Their Majesties the Queen Mothers, and Members of the Royal Family lit a thousand butter lamps at the Grand Kuenrey of Tashichhodzong for the victims of the catastrophic flash floods in Nepal and China.

Prayers were offered in the memory of those who lost their lives, for those still missing, and for their grieving families.

The Prime Minister and senior government leaders joined the ceremony, together with Nepali citizens working in Bhutan.
