Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards

Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards SLBS ... Making quality & standards our way of life. Welcome to the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS).

It was established as the National Standards Body through the enactment of the Standards Act No. 14 of 1990 but the SLBS began operations formally in April 1991. The Standards Act gives the Bureau the mandate to develop and promote standards for the improvement of local goods and services in order to encourage industrial and economic development, and to ensure the health and safety of consumers as

well as to safeguard the environment. The SLBS is the legal authority for regulating weights and measures activities on the island and was established formally as the National Metrology Institute through the enactment of the Metrology Act No. 17 of 2000. Additionally, the Bureau has been given the responsibility to develop a national metrication programme which will transform the way in which trade is carried out on the island. SLBS’s vision is to be a model of excellence in the provision of products and services in the areas of quality, standardization and metrology. While its mission is to advance by promoting quality, standardization and metrology, the improvement of the economy and the quality of life of its people. SLBS is the national entity playing a leading role in the development and management of Saint Lucia’s National Quality Infrastructure. The elements of this infrastructure include standards, conformity assessment and metrology. These elements are essential for production and trade. Business and government use these elements to optimize production and assure quality.

Building Awareness, Strengthening Tourism Services 🌴

The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) was pleased to participate in the Public Liability Insurance and Tourism Service Standards Sensitization Workshop, held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Orchid Conference Room, Union.

The workshop also provided valuable insights into Public Liability Insurance, helping participants better understand the importance of anticipating risks and being prepared to protect their businesses, customers and stakeholders.

Through initiatives like these, SLBS continues to support awareness, quality improvement and the application of standards across key sectors, contributing to a stronger and more resilient tourism industry.
