BUILT HERITAGE APPLICATION FOR ERF 8685 & 356 A, THE PRINZESSIN RUPPRECHT HEIM, SWAKOPMUND

The NHC hereby gives notice, in accordance with Section 49(1)(a)
of the National Heritage Act, 2004 (Act No. 27 of 2004), that it has received an application for proposed alterations and additions to the existing building situated on Erf 8685 & 356 A, Anton Lubowski Avenue & Bismarck Street, Swakopmund.

HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE
The Prinzessin Rupprecht Heim, currently operating as a hotel and old-age home facility, was originally constructed in 1902 as a military hospital. The building was subsequently donated to the Bavarian Federation of the Women’s Association of the German Red Cross.

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
The applicant proposes to upgrade and improve the existing old-age home facilities while retaining the historic character of the site.

The building plans are available for public inspection at the following locations from 08h00 to 17h00, Monday to Friday:
• The Prinzessin Rupprecht Heim, Erf 8685, Anton Lubowski Avenue & Bismarck Street, Swakopmund
• National Heritage Council Technical Office, Erf 153, Rev. Michael Scott Street, Windhoek

FREE ENTRY FOR NAMIBIANS @ NHC-MANAGED HERITAGE SITES IN CELEBRATION OF Namibian Heritage Week

To thank the Namibian Nation for Preserving Today for Tomorrow, the NHC will be offering FREE ENTRANCE to Namibians at the national heritage sites under its direct management during Namibian Heritage Week.

These sites include Twyfelfontein World Heritage Site, Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes, Petrified Forest, Brandberg Mountain National Heritage Site, Hoba Meteorite, Lake Otjikoto, Heroes Acre, Monument of the Unknown Plan Soldiers at Ondeshifiilwa, Omugulugwoombashe, Eenhana Shrine, Chief Hosea Kutako Homestead and Memorial Shrine and Ozombu Zovindimba.

Namibian Heritage Week originated with the idea of the National Museum of Namibia to have an annual Museum Day. The Museums Association of Namibia became a partner, extending the day to the regions. After the National Heritage Council and other stakeholders joined, it was decided to enlarge the event and change the name to
Namibian Heritage Week.

The Week encourages all Namibians to celebrate and commit to protecting our excellent natural and cultural heritage resources. Namibia’s major heritage institutions (dubbed the “Namibian Heritage Week Team”) have joined together to organise Namibian Heritage Week. However, the point about the Week is that every Namibian can participate in some way to celebrate our cultural and natural heritage.

For the National Heritage Council of Namibia, this year’s Heroes’ Day is especially meaningful.

Today, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the men and women who contributed to Namibia’s liberation and continue to shape our nation’s development. During the Investiture Ceremony held yesterday, Her Excellency President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah conferred national honours and medals on more than 1,000 Namibians in recognition of their outstanding service to the country.

The National Heritage Council of Namibia is particularly proud to celebrate Ms. Helena Nengola, Site Manager of the Heroes’ Acre National Heritage Site, who was among the recipients of this distinguished recognition. Her dedication to preserving and promoting Namibia’s heritage reflects the values and sacrifices that Heroes’ Day commemorates.

To Ms. Helena Nengola and to all Namibian heroes and heroines, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Thank you for your bravery, your resilience, and your unwavering commitment to a better Namibia.
