VISIT | Building on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year between the Namibian Judiciary and Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, His Lordship, Chief Justice Peter Shivute, today welcomed distinguished visitors from the United States of America to the Supreme Court of Namibia.

The visitors, Honourable Rich Leonard, Dean of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, and Honourable Paul C. Ridgeway, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, engaged with the Chief Justice in discussions that emphasised the growing institutional relationship between the two entities and reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening international judicial cooperation.

The engagement provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on judicial practice, legal education and professional development, further enhancing the collaborative partnership established through the MOU.

The Omuthiya Periodical Court in the Oshikoto Region commenced operations today, 8 June 2026. The Omuthiya Periodical Court will offer the full range of judicial and administrative services ordinarily available at Magistrates’ Courts throughout the country on a daily basis. This includes, but is not limited to, conducting criminal proceedings; the solemnization of marriages; handling of maintenance disputes; payment of court fines; disbursement of witness fees and receiving- and refunding of bail payments.

Presiding Magistrate Kaevarua Veruka Njembo opened proceedings with State vs Samuel Shooyeka, the inaugural matter before the court. The accused is charged with Count:1 Housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, Count 2: Assault with intent to do grievously body harm and Count of 3: Theft. The court ordered that the accused be remanded in custody on two counts and bail be granted of N$ 1000 for the count of assault.

The Omuthiya Periodical Court brings justice closer to the people of Omuthiya and neighboring communities. During this transitional period the court will preside over cases from Omuthiya, Onkumbula, Onembenge, Okatope, Omuntele, Onankali, Onanke, King Nehale and King Kauluma Police Stations as Gazetted.

High Court Main Division Continues its Tradition of Warmth with the Annual Winter Cup of Soup

Today, 5 June 2026, the High Court Main Division once again hosted its Annual Winter Cup of Soup initiative, extending warmth and kindness during the winter season.

The initiative brought together High Court Judges, legal practitioners, and staff members, who generously prepared and distributed nourishing homemade soup to the general public. The event was met with an overwhelming response, attracting a large number of people who gathered to receive a warm cup of soup and a brötchen, while experiencing the spirit of compassion and goodwill that lies at the heart of this initiative.

More than a seasonal outreach programme, the Annual Winter Cup of Soup reflects the Judiciary's commitment to serving beyond the courtroom. It is a meaningful demonstration of solidarity and humanity, a reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of others.

The High Court Main Division remains committed to fostering a culture of compassion and community support, particularly during the colder months.

Sworn-in ⚖️

Justice Dr Michael Charles Mtambo from Malawi, was sworn in today as Acting Judge of the High Court for a period of three years, effective 1 June 2026.

The Honourable Judge President, Justice Petrus Damaseb, administered the Oath of Office at the High Court.

Dr Mtambo previously served as a Judge of the High Court of Malawi from 2007 to 2022, sitting in both the Commercial Division and the Constitutional Court at the Blantyre Registry. During his judicial tenure, he adjudicated a range of significant commercial and constitutional matters, including cases involving corporate insolvency, bankruptcy, and constitutional interpretation.

JUDGES ORIENTATION| NEW HIGH COURT RULES GOVERNING THE DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGES ACT 10 OF 2024

Today, 21 May 2026, the Judge President & Deputy Chief Justice, Honourable Petrus Damaseb, conducted an information-sharing training session on the upcoming Divorce Rules of the High Court, which are set to come into effect on the 1st of June 2026.

The training took place at NIPAM in Windhoek and was attended by Judges of both the High Court and the Supreme Court, Assistant Registrars and Research Assistants. The session was aimed at equipping the Judges with a clear understanding of the new rules, their practical application, and the expected changes they will introduce to divorce proceedings before the High Court.

The Minister of Justice, Honourable Wise Immanuel, also joined the training session. His attendance signifies the importance of continued collaboration and preparedness in ensuring the effective implementation of the new legal framework.
