Busy morning in Derby! Shortly after 7 a.m. this morning, Derby A-Shift firefighters, along with automatic aid from Mulvane Fire Rescue, Sedgwick County Fire District 1 and the Wichita Fire Department , responded to a commercial building fire in the 1600 block of North Rock Road.

Engine 82 arrived to find fire showing from the roof of a fast-food restaurant. Crews deployed hose lines and power saws to the roof and brought the fire under control in approximately one hour, limiting its spread into the dining area.

No injuries were reported. The fire appears to have been electrical in origin, and damage is estimated to exceed $100,000.

While crews were operating at the fire, Derby Fire was dispatched to three additional commercial buildings for alarm activations and reports of possible fires.

It was a challenging two-hour period for our department. We sincerely thank our mutual-aid partners for their response and assistance in providing coverage throughout the City of Derby.

At approximately 5:51 a.m. this morning, A-Shift Derby Firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm activation at Derby Hills Elementary.

Engine 82 and Squad 81 arrived to find heavy smoke in the cafeteria, and the incident was upgraded to a commercial building fire. Automatic aid from SCFD1 and Mulvane were added to the response.

During their investigation, firefighters located a fire involving a grease/water separator in the kitchen area. Crews were able to quickly contain and extinguish the fire. The immediate kitchen area and cafeteria sustained moderate smoke and fire damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation; however, the fire appears to have originated within the grease/water separator.

Nobody occupied the school at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.

Derby Hills Elementary School ONLY will be closed for classes tomorrow. All other Derby schools will operate as scheduled.
