Hear about the Parkside Avenue Intersection Improvements directly from our Construction Unit staff. Work started July 20 to improve traffic safety by redesigning Parkside at 53rd and at Bryn Mawr. The new intersection designs will include additional drainage inlets, sidewalk bump outs and ADA ramps, a sidewalk level two-way bike lane, and new traffic signals.

Parkside Intersection Improvement Project construction starts today! This project redesigns Parkside Avenue’s intersections at 53rd Street and at Bryn Mawr Avenue to improve traffic safety for everyone, whether you are walking, biking, or driving. The new intersection designs will shorten crosswalk distances, slow down turning drivers, improve accessibility, and provide clearer instructions to all roadway users.

Project features:
- New intersection designs with concrete sidewalk bump-outs
- New stormwater drainage inlets
- New ADA-compliant sidewalk curb and bike ramps
- High-visibility crosswalks and roadway traffic markings
- New traffic signals, including Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) buttons and countdown timers
- New separated two-way bike facility that becomes sidewalk level at each intersection

Construction will include full road closures weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The roadway will be temporarily restored and fully reopened to traffic every afternoon and all weekend.

Highway crews continue to work alongside Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and PHLSanitation crews to clear fallen trees and clean up storm-related damage. As of Sunday afternoon, Traffic Engineering and Street Lighting crews have responded to more than 40 reports of traffic signals that are out or flashing, as well as downed streetlight poles.

Interdepartmental collaboration is how City of Philadelphia Government responds to emergencies. Thank you to our staff and everyone across the City for their dedication and hard work.
