Did you know that in 2024, people facing food insecurity were short an average of $23.16 per person, per week — adding up to a $33 billion national food budget shortfall?

Alliance member Feeding America just released Map the Meal Gap 2026, its annual look at food insecurity and food costs down to the county level. A few things that stood out to us:

🗺️ Every county and congressional district in the country has neighbors facing food insecurity 👧 Child food insecurity reached 45% in some communities 👴 Nearly 13 million seniors experienced food insecurity in 2024 🏘️ More than 8 in 10 of the highest food-insecurity counties are rural

This kind of local, on-the-ground data helps food banks, community groups, and policymakers understand exactly where the need is greatest — and it's only possible because of Feeding America's continued investment in this research.

📢 Statement from Alliance to End Hunger President Eric Mitchell ahead of Thursday's Senate Agriculture Committee markup of the Agricultural Act of 2026:

Since last year's reconciliation law took effect, 4.5 million people — including more than 1 million children — have lost access to SNAP. The revised Farm Bill gives states a bit more breathing room, but it does nothing to address the harm already being felt by families facing hunger today.

We're calling on the Senate Agriculture Committee to advance a more meaningful two-year delay in SNAP cost shifts to states, to prevent further harm to people who need food assistance.

Congratulations to our President, Eric Mitchell, on being honored at End Hunger Connecticut! 's 2nd Annual Gala for his national leadership and advocacy in the fight against hunger.

It's a well-earned recognition, but in his acceptance remarks, Eric made clear the award isn't really about one person: "While my name may be on this award, I accept it on behalf of colleagues at the Alliance to End Hunger, other advocates, partners, and community leaders who dedicate themselves every day to ensuring that no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from."

The numbers behind that work are sobering. More than 47 million people across the U.S. experience food insecurity. In Connecticut alone, over half a million people, including more than 100,000 children, struggle to put food on the table. Rising food costs and recent federal policy changes are putting even more strain on the families and organizations working to close that gap. And yet, as Eric put it: "hunger is not inevitable, it is a policy choice. Which means it's also a choice we can change."

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report is out 📊 — and the headline number tells only part of the story. Yes, global hunger is declining. That's real progress, and worth acknowledging. But three things also stand out:

1. We're not on track ⏳

The pace of decline isn't fast enough to hit the Sustainable Development Goal of ending hunger by 2030. "Improving" and "on track" are not the same thing.

2. Progress is deeply uneven 🌍

For the first time, Africa now accounts for the largest absolute number of people facing hunger globally — even as the share of Africa's population facing hunger has actually decreased.

3. Filling bellies isn't the same as feeding people well 🍽️

Fewer people going hungry doesn't mean more people eating healthily. Nutritious diets remain financially out of reach for huge numbers of people worldwide, and especially across Africa. We can reduce hunger and still fail on nutrition.

The takeaway: hunger and malnutrition are related but distinct problems, and solving one doesn't automatically solve the other. If we want to hit our 2030 goals, we need strategies that address affordability and access to nutritious food — not just caloric sufficiency.
