The Ministry of Works and Transport has issued a clarification regarding the participation of local SMEs in the Oshakati–Ompundja Road Project.

The Ministry remains committed to promoting meaningful participation of Namibian businesses in public infrastructure projects, while ensuring compliance with applicable procurement and contractual requirements.

ZAMBEZI REGION 🇳🇦

Hon. Veikko Nekundi, MP, Minister of Works and Transport, visited the Zambezi Region to assess the storage of floating bridges previously erected in flood-affected areas to provide communities with access to essential basic services. The bridges are currently stored at the Zambezi Regional Council premises.

The Minister also visited the Bukalo–Muyako–Ngoma Road Project to assess progress and engage on the factors affecting its completion.

The project was initially scheduled for completion on 23 June 2026. However, realignment works and other factors affected the completion timeline, resulting in the project falling 54 days behind schedule.

According to the Contractor’s Recovery Plan, the revised completion date is November 2026, with the road scheduled for handover on 24 November 2026.

The visit forms part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to monitor the implementation of critical infrastructure projects and ensure improved connectivity and service delivery to communities.

The Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, Honourable Hans Haikali, today visited the Omaheke Region to assess progress on key road projects and inspect transport-related facilities across the region.

The Deputy Minister was accompanied by Honourable Wenzel Kavaka, Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Technology and Otjombinde Constituency representative, as well as Honourable Rocco Nguvauva, Omaheke Regional Chairperson and Okorukambe Constituency representative.

The visit forms part of the Ministry’s continued commitment to monitoring infrastructure development, strengthening service delivery, and engaging directly with workers and communities on the ground.

Through these engagements, the Ministry continues to ensure that infrastructure projects are progressing as planned and that the needs of communities are reflected in the delivery of essential transport services.

The Ministry of Works and Transport continues its nationwide stakeholder consultations on the registration and regulation of driving schools and driving instructors, with engagements held in Swakopmund on 24 August 2026, Otjiwarongo on 27 August 2026 and Oshakati on 28 August 2026.

Hon. Veikko Nekundi, MP, Minister of Works and Transport, addressed participants in Oshakati, emphasizing the importance of professional, properly trained and regulated driving instructors in building safer and more responsible road users.

These engagements provide an opportunity to listen to those on the ground, gather valuable input and ensure that the regulatory framework is practical, effective and responsive to the needs of the sector.

Together, we are working towards better driver education, stronger standards, safer roads and an overall a Decade of Action for Road Safety in Namibia.

Hon. Veikko Nekundi, MP, Minister of Works and Transport, delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 33rd Southern African Regional Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-33), held today in Swakopmund.

In his address, the Minister emphasised the urgent need for Southern Africa to move from climate observation and prediction to early action, calling for stronger investment in meteorological services, weather observation networks and multi-hazard early warning systems.

He stressed that climate change is already affecting communities across the region, with extreme weather events posing serious risks to livelihoods, infrastructure and development.

The Minister called on SADC Member States to translate climate forecasts and scientific knowledge into practical action that protects lives, strengthens resilience and ensures that no community is left behind.

“Let us use this SARCOF platform not just to talk, but to commit. Not just to plan, but to implement. Not just to hope, but to act.”
