Five nonprofit community organizations across the state received a combined $145,469.64 to help low-income Kansans achieve stability and access economic opportunities.

The awards, provided through federal Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) discretionary funding, will support initiatives ranging from helping women transition from incarceration to employment and improving health navigation for low-income Kansans in Shawnee County, to providing workforce readiness training in Riley County, expanding childcare access for low-income Harvey County families, providing hands-on education to support neighborhood revitalization in Wyandotte County, and providing financial empowerment skills for participants in Shawnee County.

We’d like to extend another round of virtual applause and huge congratulations to Homestead Affordable Housing, the winners of this year’s $2,000 Show Off Your Service Award, which will help support their Beef for Seniors project. The award, sponsored by the Kansas Bankers Association, will help Beef for Seniors buy steers annually from local Jackson County 4-H youth, process the beef in Holton, and supply quarters and sides of beef to the nearly 500 senior households they serve for community meals and cookouts.

Each year, we invite conference attendees to show off their housing-related public service projects by pitching their creative solutions that inspire neighboring communities for a chance to secure the most votes from attendees to win the award.

This year’s competition was tougher than ever, packed with incredible strategies from passionate groups across the state. Thank you to every group that submitted and shared their work with us. Your dedication to serving Kansans is inspiring, and we can’t wait to see these impactful projects continue to grow! On Aug. 18, Ryan Vincent, Executive Director of KHRC joined with local officials from Dodge City/Ford County Development Corporation, OMA Construction LLC, and Grant County Bank to celebrate the ribbon cutting of 22 new single-family homes and one duplex, creating 24 new housing units designed to provide high-quality, attainable homes for Dodge City, Kansas families.

"Beyond providing new housing, the project contributes to workforce attraction, neighborhood revitalization, and the long-term vitality of the community," quotes a news release published by the Dodge City/Ford County Economic Development Corportion released Aug. 18.
