Today we kicked off the FY24 U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command & U.S. 4th Fleet Maritime Synchronization Symposium onboard Naval Station Mayport! The MSC is an opportunity for U.S. Navy attachés, section chiefs and other stakeholders from the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of responsibility to discuss common naval issues and concerns to develop innovative solutions for current and future operations in the Caribbean, Central, and South America.

On November 20, Adm. Luis Polar Figari, Commander-in-Chief of the Marina de Guerra del Perú, Capt. Jennifer Jones, U.S. Senior Defense Official and Defense Attache in Peru, family, friends, members of the Peruvian Navy and members of the U.S. naval mission in Peru commemorated the life and service of Peruvian Navy Cmdr. Maria Belen Canales Cueva, who passed away earlier this year.

During the ceremony, which took place in the Admiral Grau room at Peru Navy Headquarters in Lima, Capt. Jones presented the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal on behalf of the U.S. Navy to Cmdr. Canales’ mother.

Cmdr. Canales served as the deputy secretary of the Inter-American Naval Telecommunications Network (IANTN) Secretariat based at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., from January 2021 to March 2023. In that role, Canales served as the first female deputy secretary of IANTN in its 60-year history.

IKYMI - U.S. Navy's Commander, Submarine Forces Atlantic Vice Adm. William J. Houston and Armada de Colombia's Chief of Staff for Naval Operations Vice Adm. Orlando Grisales met at Naval Station Mayport to confirm and sign Concept of Operations letters to extend their participation in the Diesel-Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) together this weekend!

Colombian submarine ARC Pijao recently finished a DESI deployment, employed as a training party in Fleet Response Training Plan exercises. The boat stayed pierside here in Mayport last week and served as the host for signing the renewal letters.

U.S. 4th Fleet planners supported U.S. Naval War College professors in leading the inaugural maritime planning symposium in Peru, designed to introduce the Military Decision Making Process – Multinational.

Navies from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay sent junior officers to participate in the seminar.

Hooyah Teamwork South 2023! U.S. and Chilean maritime forces participated in a photo exercise at the conclusion of Teamwork South, a biennial, bilateral anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise hosted by Chile. Teamwork South increased interoperability and improved capability for all participating forces.
