53 years ago, Adm Elmo Zumwalt Jr. (Chief of Naval Operations from 1970-1974) established the Navy’s Ombudsman Program, providing a specialized resource to commands and their families.
The Ombudsman is a Navy spouse volunteer, appointed by the commanding officer, who serves as both a link between the commanding officer and families (especially while at sea) and a trained source of information regarding available programs for command families.
The Navy Ombudsman has proven to be an invaluable resource. On September 14th, 2023, we honored Mrs. Justine Sandberg, our command Ombudsman, on Ombudsman Appreciation Day. Thank you again Justine, from the CARNEY TEAM, for everything you do for our sailors and families!
Mrs. Sandberg’s Ombudsman contact information is listed below:

Today, our hearts are heavy as we remember those we lost in the 9/11 attacks. On this , our crew is observing a moment of remembrance and reflection at the exact time of each attack, marked by two bells and a reading from our CPO Selectees. Everyday, we continue to serve in their honor and .

Happy Ombudsman Appreciation Day!!
On September 14, 1970, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt issued the first Navy Family Ombudsman Program Instruction. To celebrate the inception of the program, each September is recognized as Ombudsman Appreciation Month
The Ombudsman is a volunteer, appointed by the Commanding Officer, to serve as an information link between command leadership and Navy families. Ombudsmen are trained to disseminate information both up and down the chain of command, including official Department of the Navy and command information, command climate issues, and local quality of life improvement opportunities.
Ombudsmen also provide resource referrals when needed. They are instrumental in resolving family issues before the issues require extensive command attention. The Command Ombudsman is appointed by and works under the guidance of the Commanding Officer who determines the priorities of the program, the roles and relationships of those involved in it, and the type and level of support
it will receive.
Navy Family Ombudsmen serve as a liaison between commands and all family members within a command, including spouses, parents and extended family members.
Many thanks to our ombudsman Mirabel!

Your CARNEY crew accomplished so much this underway! From small arms to 5 inch shoots; NSFS, CRY, and STT training; numerous boat operations; countless engineering evolutions; an UNREP of epic proportions; welcoming the future by hosting Midshipmen and four successful steel beach picnics; and honoring those who came before us in a Burial at Sea – CARNEY sailors rose to the challenge and proved once again why CARNEY is 505 feet of American “Fighting Steel”!
Please enjoy our July Underway album, full of our daily adventures.

07/31/2022
We love seeing our Families as we pull back in! Thanks for all the 👋 waves!

07/27/2022
Some quick photos from the past few days:
Engineering evolutions are certified…now we are on to drilling! Huge accomplishment by our engineers!
You CARNEY Sailors also did underway replenishment, loading over 238,000 gallons of fuel safely while driving 180 feet away from an oiler!
We are making the most of our underway, and we will be excited to announce all the newly qualified Sailors that have assumed new watch stations once we pull in!

Good Morning CARNEY NATION!
CARNEY recently received a visit from Navy WW2 and Korean War Vet David D Jordan and his daughter Mary Jordan Anstead. Mr. Jordan served as a Machinist Mate Refrigeration (MMR) from 1945 to 1952. His tours included NAVSTA Guam, USS General William Mitchell (AP 114), and USS Cronin (DE 704). Mr. Jordan enjoyed walking around the Main Deck of CARNEY admiring the various combat systems, engineering, and weapons equipment. He turns 95 in July!
Please join us in thanking Mr. Jordan for his service and visit!

06/25/2022
🇨🇴Welcome to Mayport! 🇨🇴
Some of our Junior Officers welcomed the Colombian submarine down the pier from us. We were able to exchange tours (and coffee) while also gaining a new appreciation for how big 505 feet really is when compared to a submarine!

06/24/2022
CARNEY Families!
“You don’t build a fire station when things are on fire…it has to already be in place to help in an emergency.”
Now that we are starting to get more operational, we would love to restart our Family Readiness Group (FRG). Once the ship deploys, we will need our families to have the tools to help each other and our Sailors. If we build our team now, we will be better prepared!
Fleet and Family Centers on Mayport and NAS Jax bases conduct training for those folks interested! Next session is 16 July. If you would like to help us build this connection, please reach out to our ombudsman! Uss Carney Ombudsman

Could your PAO please reach out to me. I have a few images from this morning for you. Thank you!
STG1 (SW) Steven Conrad (Retired) Plankowner, pre-com -1999
My address is 3129 Deerflower Rd, San Diego, CA 92115
I am currently stationed in San Diego on the USS Scout MCM-8 and they have me TAD to the USS Champion MCM-4. I currently do not have a ship email. And the email I had on the Scout is probably disconnected because I haven't used it in like 3 months because I haven't been there. If this is a possible request could someone message me so we can work out the details. Thank you for your time.
Very Respectfully,
MM1(SW) Montgomery
