Huge win for Alaska's Public Employees! Thank you Rep. Chuck Kopp!

A Promise Kept for Alaska’s Public Servants

Today is a day worth celebrating.
The disability benefit reforms I introduced in HB 210 have officially become law after being incorporated into HB 14.

For too long, public employees who suffered a career-ending injury or illness in the line of duty faced an unfair reality. Their disability income dropped to just 40% of their base pay, and disabled workers lost their employer health insurance precisely when their families needed it most.

That changes today.

Occupational disability benefits increase from 40% to 75% of base pay.

Eligible occupationally disabled PERS members will continue to receive major medical health insurance coverage.

This legislation provides greater security for the law enforcement officers, firefighters, correctional officers, emergency responders, dispatchers, public works employees, and countless other public servants who risk their own well-being in service to Alaska.

This accomplishment was truly a team effort.

Thank you to Governor Mike Dunleavy for allowing this legislation to become law.

Thank you to Senator Rob Yundt and Senator Cathy Giessel for championing these reforms in the Senate.

Thank you to Representative Will Stapp for carrying HB 14, which became the legislative vehicle that ultimately delivered these protections for Alaska’s public servants.

Finally, thank you to the many employee organizations and advocates who supported this effort and everyone who spoke up on behalf of Alaska’s injured public servants.

No one who is permanently injured protecting our communities should lose their health insurance or face financial hardship because they answered the call to serve.

Today, Alaska took an important step toward honoring that commitment.
A promise kept. A fairer Alaska.
