Exhibition opening in Gallerie Käytävä

Ambassador, Harald Aspelund and Dr. Ásthildur Jónsdóttir, opened three exhibitions in their home Gallerie Käytävä, by the Icelandic artists, Guðjón Ketilsson, Guðrún Gunnarsdóttir and Rakel Andrésdóttir:

✨ Mirages by Guðjón Ketilsson explores the space between reality and imagination through sculptures, painted branches, and spatial constructions. His poetic landscapes of reflections, shadows, and geometric forms invite us to reflect on the many layers of meaning and perception that shape our experience of the world.

✨ Interwoven Worlds by Guðrún Gunnarsdóttir brings together textile traditions, drawing, and installation. Working with horsehair, plastic thread, and wire, she creates delicate forms that unfold like three-dimensional drawings, balancing structure, movement, and material experimentation.

✨ Small Motions by Rakel Andrésdóttir presents animated works that move between fantasy, personal narrative, and social observation. Through stop-motion animation, installation, and storytelling, she creates imaginative worlds filled with humour, vulnerability, and dreamlike transformations of everyday life.

The exhibitions are curated by Dr Ásthildur Jónsdóttir.

Ambassador Harald Aspelund had the pleasure to speak at the European Humanities University in Vilnius on the history of Iceland's independence.

During the lecture, he reflected on the key events, challenges, and achievements that shaped Iceland's path to democracy. He was particularly pleased to engage with students and faculty in a thoughtful discussion about the importance of historical memory, democratic values, and the lessons that history offers for the future.

Sincere thanks to the European Humanities University for the invitation and to all participants for their insightful questions and active engagement.

Alþingi samþykkti nýverið þingsályktun um að efna til þjóðaratkvæðagreiðslu um framhald aðildarviðræðna Íslands við Evrópusambandið. Atkvæðagreiðslan fer fram laugardaginn 29. ágúst 2026, en utankjörfundaratkvæðagreiðsla verður opin frá 27. júlí 2026.

Hægt verður að kjósa í sendiráðinu og hjá ræðismönnum þar sem það á við. Nánari upplýsingar um staðsetningar, opnunartíma og fyrirkomulag verða kynntar þegar nær dregur.

Af þessu tilefni hefur utanríkisráðuneytið opnað sérstaka upplýsingasíðu á íslensku og ensku sem verður uppfærð reglulega eftir því sem nýjar upplýsingar berast. Sendiráðið mun sömuleiðis veita frekari upplýsingar þegar þær liggja fyrir, en í millitíðinni hvetjum við öll til að skoða upplýsingarsíðurnar, sem eru í athugasemdum hér að neðan.

The Nordic and Baltic Embassies came together in Vilnius to mark our National Days in a joint celebration for the first time.

The occasion highlighted the strong bonds and mutual trust that connect our countries. United by shared values and common interests, the Nordic and Baltic nations work closely together to strengthen the security, stability, and resilience of our region.

We were pleased to celebrate alongside our Lithuanian partners and friends, including Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, whose remarks underscored the deep cooperation and many links that bring our countries together.

Thank you to all our guests for helping make this historic gathering such a meaningful occasion.

The ocean is a source of food, nutrition and oxygen and is one of the essential pillars of life on earth.
For decades, Iceland has been a strong advocate for sustainable use and management of ocean resources, marine conservation, and the rights of coastal states.

The ocean belongs to all of us, and we must protect it.

A wonderful gathering of Lithuanian and Icelandic friends, partners, and collaborators took place at Takk Ísland on Iceland Street in Vilnius, celebrating not only Lithuania’s 35th anniversary of regained independence, but also the enduring friendship between our two nations.

Opening the event, Ambassador Harald Aspelund reflected on the historic bond between Lithuania and Iceland, recalling Iceland’s role as the first country to recognize Lithuania’s restored independence in 1991. He emphasized that while Iceland is honored by Lithuania’s gratitude, “the greatest honor belongs to the people of Lithuania and to all those who defended liberty, dignity, and democracy.” He also reminded us that freedom is never guaranteed and must be protected and passed on to future generations.

A special highlight of the evening was a panel discussion featuring former President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson alongside Ieva Stephanoviciute, Ásthildur Jónsdóttir, Rasa Baranauskienė, and Mantas Titas Urbonas, founder of the Takk Ísland festival. The conversation explored the unique connections between Lithuania and Iceland and the many opportunities for continued cooperation, cultural exchange, and friendship.

As part of the Takk Ísland programme, the exhibition Drift Between Shores by Þorgerður Jörundsdóttir was officially opened at the Consulate Gallery in Vilnius. Curated by Dr. Ásthildur Jónsdóttir, the exhibition reflects on movement, connection, and the shared horizons that link people and places across shores.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mantas Titas Urbonas and the entire Takk Ísland team for bringing this meaningful celebration to life year after year.

It was a great honour for Ambassador Harald Aspelund to formally open the conference "Hidden Bridges, Rediscovered Paths: Iceland – Lithuania Through Time" at Vilnius University.

As we mark the 35th anniversary of Lithuania’s regained independence in 1991, this gathering provided a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the remarkable bonds between Lithuania and Iceland. Iceland being the first country to recognize the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, demonstrating principled support at a pivotal moment. Yet the ties between our nations extend far beyond this historic milestone, reaching deep into centuries of shared history, cultural exchange, and academic collaboration. The conference highlighted how these enduring connections have continued to strengthen over time, shaping a friendship that remains vibrant and relevant today.

The conference paid tribute to the extraordinary legacy of Jörundur G. Hilmarsson (1946–1992), whose pioneering work helped build bridges between Iceland and Lithuania at a time when such connections were neither easy nor obvious. As a linguist, educator, translator, and Lithuania’s first Honorary Consul in Iceland, Jörundur’s contribution continues to inspire scholars, students, and friends of both countries.

Over two days, distinguished speakers from Iceland, Lithuania, and beyond explored the many intersections of our histories, languages, and cultures. The participation of Jörundur’s family as well as the accompanying memorial exhibition dedicated to Jörundur Hilmarsson, added a deeply personal dimension to the event.

The Embassy of Iceland thanks Vilnius University, the conference organizers, participants, and guests for their dedication and enthusiasm. The strong ties between Iceland and Lithuania are built not only through political cooperation but also through the work of individuals who foster understanding, friendship, and cultural exchange.

May we continue to rediscover these hidden bridges and create new paths for future generations.

A wonderful evening at Turku Art Museum, where Ambassador Harald Aspelund had the honour of officially opening three new exhibitions: Millefleurs by Icelandic artist Eggert Pétursson, The Path by Pia Sirén, and State of Alert by Pasi Autio.

In his opening remarks, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of cultural exchange, the strong connections between Iceland and Finland and the art’s ability to teach us to appreciate nature and our place within it.

Ingibjörg Jóhannsdóttir, Director of the National Gallery of Iceland, highlighted in her remarks the wonderful collaboration with the Turku Art Museum.

We were delighted to celebrate alongside the artists, museum representatives, and guests.

A special congratulations to Eggert Pétursson on the opening of Millefleurs, showcasing his unique artistic vision inspired by Icelandic nature. Special thanks to Turku Art Museum and it’s team.
